“No way,” she said, mouth falling open a bit. “Wait… why are some red?”

“Because Eddie thinks we need more vegetables in our diet, I’m assuming,” I said. “They’re probably beet or something,” I told her, watching her nose wrinkle. “No, trust me, they’re gonna be good,” I told her, holding one of the beet ones out for her to try.

She didn’t take it, just leaned in and let me push it into her mouth.

“Okay. Fine. They’re good. Out of curiosity… can Eddie be hired? For events? Private events? With one customer? But said customer has a notoriously large appetite?” she asked, and this time the smile showed her dimples.

“Eddie would cook for you anytime,” I told her. “All you gotta do is drop by the clubhouse.”

There.

An invitation.

Now it was just up to her to take me up on it.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Rynn

“Soooo… how’d it go?” Josie asked, nearly making me jump out of my skin as I walked into the office, not expecting her to be there. I’d given her the day off.

But, of course, she knew I would drop in to at least feed Binx and clean the litter box. So she was lying in wait, ready to pounce.

“Christ, Josie,” I said, hand to my heart.

“Come on. I’ve been sitting here for, like, two hours already. How was it? Was it amazing? You look flushed. It wasthatgood?” she asked, practically bouncing in her seat.

I raised my hand to my cheek, feeling the over-sensitivity of it.

“It’s sunburn,” I admitted. Cato had told me as much as he walked me to my car at the end of the… date.

I mean… you had to call that a date, right?

An activity, some food, amazing sex.

It sure seemed like a date.

Even if I was decidedly not a dating sort of girl.

“You went in the sun for him?” she asked, eyes going almost comically round.

I mean, I wasn’t fucking allergic to the sun or anything, but I did tend to stay out of it whenever possible. That was why I was generally so pale.

If my cheeks were burnt, I was a bit worried about what I would find when I stripped out of my clothes later and looked in the mirror.

I’d never had a titty sunburn, but it sounded awful.

“He took me kayaking in alligator-infested waters,” I told her.

Alright, fine. We were out there for hours, and we’d only seen that one alligator who seemed completely disinterest in eating us. But still.

“You went out in the sunandexercised for him?” Josie asked, growing more incredulous by the moment.

“No. He did the paddling. I did the sitting and alligator-watching.”

“You were gone for a long time. Were you kayaking that whole time?”

“No. We found a dock and had lunch there,” I told her. “And sex,” I added. Because it was true. And because Josie wouldn’t be scandalized about that fact.
