His rough hand lands on the side of my face as his cock slides in further. He’s swelling, throbbing, pulsating against my walls. “You make me feel like I’ve never felt, Piper. I’m never letting you go.”

Growl after growl leaves his throat and his heavy breath spills into my ear. I want him deeper. I need him stretching me wide.

We’re enveloped in the moment, lost in the storm, lost in each other, living for the minute, memorizing every touch. It’s heaven.

Well, it’s heaven for about thirty seconds, when a heavy knock hits the side of the truck window. I glance toward the figure, my heart racing. Even in the rain, through darkened windows, I recognize the shape of the woman standing outside. It’s my sister, and for the life of me, I can’t imagine what the hell she’s doing here.

Chapter Six

Romeo

I should’ve strapped Piper into the backseat of the truck and taken her across the border. I’m sure there’s a nice little cabin somewhere in Canada with a Christmas tree farm and a dozen apple trees. We could’ve changed our names, worn disguises, and become hermits.

“Dad was in an accident.” Her sister stands outside the truck in a rain jacket that doesn’t seem to be working. Her golden hair is soaked and dripping.

Piper’s face wells with worry as she grips my leg tighter. “What?”

I hold her tight against my frame, desperate to quell any ache she’s feeling.

Her sister nods. “I tried calling you like half a dozen times. He was on his bike near the quarry and got spun off the road by a logging truck. They said he’s stable, but it’s not good. Mom rode with him in the ambulance. We should go.”

“We’ll follow you to the hospital,” I say, starting up the truck. “Springs General?”

Piper glances toward me as though I’ve lost my mind.

“You can’t.” Piper’s brows narrow “Now isn’t the time for introductions.”

“I won’t go in.” I reach for her hand and squeeze it against mine. “Please, let me be there for you.”

Her sister wipes rain out of her vision. “My car is filled with shit I was bringing home from my dorm, anyway. I didn’t have time to move it. Ride with your guy. You can follow me.”

Piper sighs and nods. “We’re right behind you.”

The rain picks up and her sister jogs around the corner, slipping on a patch of mud but catches herself with a branch and steadies.

I blow out a breath of air and back the truck up. I guess my spot wasn’t as foolproof as I’d hoped. We were found right away. I glance toward Piper, a little impressed that she told someone about us. I’ve been telling everyone who’ll listen, but considering her position, I didn’t figure she’d told a soul.

She glances toward me, anxiety wrinkling her forehead. “Do you think he’ll be okay?”

I grip her hand in mine and pull her closer. “They have smart people up there. I’m sure they’ll take good care of him.”

She glances toward me, then away, staring out the window for too damn long. She’s in her head again.

“You’re upset right now, darling. You’re scared. That doesn’t mean you have to regret what happened between us.” I squeeze her hand. “I love you.”

She glances toward me. “I think about you all the time, Romeo. I imagine what our life would be like. Both of us working on a little ranch with a bunch of horses and an orchard with fields of fruit trees. I think about the way you’d hold me in your arms as we watched the sun go down on the front porch. Or the way you’d sound calling the dogs in at night.” A tear streaks down her face. “But you know as well as I do… that’s never going to happen.”

“Why?” I stop behind Alaina at the trailhead and look toward Piper. “Why can’t it happen? I could convince your dad that—”

“My dad is on his way to the hospital! They don’t take people to the Springs unless it’s bad. If I’d been home to help, maybe he wouldn’t have gone up to the quarry. He asked me to stop by there today and grab his toolbox, after he left it behind Friday.”

I blow out a heavy breath and squeeze her hand. “It’s not your fault. You can’t do everything for them.”

“I can try.” She brushes a tear off her face and leans against my chest.

This is where we stalemate. It’s like a broken record I continue to play because the music is worth the terrible sound that comes from the crack.

I reach out for her leg and settle my hand on her thigh. “You can have both, Piper. Rugged Mountain MC is voting on bringing me in this week. I can make changes, and your dad will see what we have. He’ll come around.”
