She bites her chapped lip and stares toward me. “I told the cop I had to pee, and I ran.” One foot after the other, we help her up into the truck. “They followed my trail for a while, but I heard them on the phone with Johnathan. Tex, Johnathan said he wanted them to make me ‘disappear.’They were all laughing and—” She draws in a deep breath and buries her face against my chest.

I shoot a look of rage toward Chap.

“You take the truck home.” He tosses the keys toward me. “There’s a cooler in the backseat with cold water and snacks. I’ll take your bike.” Chap rides regularly, but isn’t a fan of long-distance trips.

We exchange another look. This one is darker, and I know he hears me loud and clear though I haven’t said a word. I want to take‘the asshole’out myself. I want to see the look in his fucking eyes as his last breath spills from his disgusting mouth.

Chap pats me on the back and glances toward Sierra. “You have important things to take care of. We’ve got you.” I know without a shadow of a doubt Chap and Knight will be solid understudies in my revenge fantasy. I need to stay with Sierra and make sure she’s okay. That will always be my first priority going forward.

My girl leans her head against my shoulder, a tremble in her voice as she says, “He’s not worth it, Tex. I don’t know what I ever trusted in him.”

I wrap my arm around her as she scoots down and lays her head on my lap. “Sleep, little mama. We’ll be home in four hours, and everything will make more sense again.”

My hand is in her hair and her heart is in my chest. She belongs to me. Even when she didn’t, she did. I need to take her home.

Chapter Seven

Sierra

When I open my eyes, I’m in a cozy cabin overlooking a quiet turquoise lake. The edges of the shore are rocky with colorful gravel in shades of green, gray, and white. Shallow waves lap the water’s edge gently.

Inside, the cabin is warm and minimal with a wood plank floor and an old gun rack near the doorway. The wind whistles through the cracks in the window seal and the rich scent of coffee pulls me upright.

The bed creaks and squeaks as I stand and make my toward the rich scent. Thankfully, I didn’t dream that Tex carried me away. He did, and I’m here. This must be his cabin.

His cabin.

Opening the door, I soak in every detail of the home. The pot-bellied stove in the living room, the wood gathered onto the hearth, the deer antlers hung by the front door used to hang coats. Outside on the front porch, Tex sits with two other men. They’re discussing something low, and I don’t want to interrupt, so I help myself to the coffee brewing on the stone countertop.

From this point, the view out the patio door is incredible. Mountains for miles and before that, a low valley with a meandering stream and acres of pine and aspen. It’s also now obvious that the man Tex is talking to belongs to the motorcycle club. That or he’s a leather clad Boy Scout with a few fire building patches.

“You’re awake!” A rival giant swings opens the bathroom door and makes his way into the kitchen. “We were getting worried about you.”

My brows narrow instinctively. I know I’m safe because Tex is ten feet away, but this guy is alarming. Though, I think I remember him from before I passed out in the truck.

“Oh.” His face is straight despite his upbeat voice. “I’m Knight. Good to meet you. We’ll be out of here soon, just discussing your…” he clears his throat and pauses as though he’s already said too much.

“Johnathan?”

“Yeah. Him.” There’s an undertone of disgust in his voice.

“What happened? Is he after me? Is my mom okay?”

“Your mom is fine. Johnathan though…” The man stalls and looks toward the patio door as though he’s desperate for rescue.

My stomach sinks. After what I heard Johnathan say on the phone, I’m not sure I care what happens to him. That said, I’m also positive I don’t want to know the details.

“You won’t hear from him again.” Knight looks away as he speaks. “I don’t like hurting people but if it’s your life or his… I—”

I read between the lines and blow out a heavy breath of confusion. At first, I think the breath is relief, but the truth is, I don’t know what to feel. Days ago, I thought I’d never see Tex again. I thought Johnathan loved me. I convinced myself that whatever we had was real. Now I realize none of that was true. Johnathan is clearly insane.

“The man wasn’t good,” Knight says, reaching out to me in comfort. “He had men hired to go after that woman he got pregnant, too. We ran into each other by chance at the train station in town before we knew any of this was happening. I’ve been watching out for her.”

My blood pops and boils under my skin. How could Johnathan do that? How could he send someone to kill anyone, but especially a woman pregnant with his child?

“She’s here right now, actually. I, ugh, I know that might be hard for you all things considered. Tex didn’t know she was coming today.”

If Johnathan and I had been in love, I’d be insane with rage. Instead, I’m numb to the entire idea. Now, the only thing I want or care about is burying myself in Tex’s arms.
