“To confront the villain in our midst.”

The same one that tricked me into loving him again.

Chapter 46

Teodoro

She enters my room like a storm, ready to lay waste to anything in her path.

“Is it true?” she asks, her voice so cold that if I touched it, it would no doubt burn me.

“What is?”

“That you and your father killed Levi’s parents?”

The black, gruesome shadow of guilt runs its fingers up my spine before gripping my neck from behind, sinking its ugly claws into me.

“I thought you knew,” I lie, turning my back to her in favor of walking toward my window.

The bedsheets are still warm from our lovemaking, yet here she is calling me a murderer.

Not that I’m not.

I am what she accuses me of.

I am that traitor who damned his soul for love.

“Don’t you fucking turn your back to me, Teodoro!” she curses, making me inwardly flinch with how angry she is at me.

Make this nightmare end, oh heavenly ones.

For my heart cannot take a second longer of her hate.

“Answer me!” she yells, pulling my arm so that I spin in her direction.

I put on a smile, the same one that hides my pain, and stretch it as wide as I can physically bear it.

“Oh my gods. You did, didn’t you?”

My nails sink into my palms at the way she had held out hope that somehow, by some miracle, Levi was wrong.

He must have confessed everything to her in that wretched letter of his.

His last effort to win back her love.

The only thing that confuses me is why he didn’t tell her before she journeyed south. Was the memory so hard to bear, that he couldn’t even summon up the courage to tell his queen of my complicity in the horrors that occurred that night?

The answer to that question is an affirmative yes.

Like me, Levi must have buried that memory deep into the confinement of his soul where no one could see or touch.

“Was it all a ploy?” she asks, tears streaming down her cheeks in both anger and sorrow. “Was your plan to seduce me and then when crowned King of Aikyam, you’d find a way to get rid of me too?

“Fuck your crown,” I growl, my voice no longer my own.

She slaps me, tears free falling now.

“How I ever saw any beauty in you is mind-blowing to me now. You’re a monster. A villain. A liar and a cheat! You never cared about me. You never cared about anyone except yourself. This was all a game to you. You play with people’s lives and then sit back to enjoy the chaos you created. You murdered one of your best friend’s parents. You watched them die and did nothing. And then to my shame, you won me over with that traitorous smile, all because you wanted to steal my birthright.”
