I’m about to continue on my rant, when Levi presses his finger right at the center of my lips, stunning me silent.

“I like the diamond just fine, Kat. That’s not why I didn’t say anything.”

“Oh?” I manage to croak out after he’s pulled his finger off my lips.

“It’s just that…”

“That what?” I wait with bated breath.

“It’s just that you look absolutely transcendent tonight.”

My heart melts into a puddle at our feet.

“I do?”

“Like the finest star the gods could ever make. Exceptional.”

My eyelids grow heavy at his words, while the rest of my body feels like it might burst into flames.

“Oh.”

“Yeah. Oh,” he repeats, that same shy smile of his cresting his lips.

Left at a loss for words, I just let Levi take the lead.

We dance and dance until my feet beg for me to sit down.

But I don’t want to.

I’ll dance the whole night away as long as I get to do it with Levi.

Because if I’m a star for him, then Levi is the sun.

While one boy vowed that he loved me with mere words, the other showed me how much he cared for me with his actions.

Who am I to believe?

Who is my heart to trust?

Not that it matters.

I’ll never get the opportunity to choose.

Chapter 19

Katrina

That night we danced until there was no one left on the dance floor. It had been my late mother who had eventually pulled me away from Levi’s embrace, later whispering in my ear that if I wanted to keep receiving him and his family each year, that I shouldn’t be so transparent with my affection for him.

At the time, I had brushed it off, but now…

Now I wonder if Levi had my heart all along.

Such a troubling thought when my purpose is to conquer his affection instead of the other way around. Still, I can’t deny how he has slowly gotten under my skin. And after that brief intimate moment we shared in the woods, I doubt I’ll ever be able to rid myself of the memory of his touch.

His kiss.

His scent.
