“Hold up,” I interrupted. “Gavin, I don’t give a fuck if you join the club. It’s my path. Never expected it to be yours unless it’s what you wanted.”

Jensen had been a prospect since he turned eighteen almost a year ago, but Gavin hadn’t mentioned it, which had surprised me because of my two boys, he’d always been the wilder, rougher one. Still, I hadn’t mentioned it. I just wanted my kids to be happy. Cece was studying to be a vet, and Jana, our youngest, had been obsessed with dancing since she was two. After she graduated high school, she intended to go to a ballet conservatory.

Couldn’t say it didn’t make me proud that all four of my children enjoyed riding, though.

“You boys are turning into damn fine men, and that’s all I need to be proud of you.”

Gavin sighed and ran an agitated hand through his already messy, shoulder-length hair.

“The thing is…I want to go to the police academy.”

The garage was filled with silence, both boys tense and waiting for Gavin’s announcement to sink in.

At first, I was stunned speechless. It had never occurred to me that one of my boys would want to be a cop. But as common sense slowly returned, I realized that it shouldn’t be such a shock.

Alyssa’s parents had been the best grandparents our kids could have asked for. Steady figures in their lives, role models, and they spoiled the kids rotten. Maybe I should have expected one of them to want to follow in their grandpa’s footprints.

“After you graduate college?” I finally asked gruffly.

Gavin nodded, still watching me warily.

“As long as you finish school first, your choices are your own, kid. Don’t worry about what anyone else wants or what you think they expect of you.” I smiled and picked up the tool I’d been using, turning on my stool and getting back to my task.

“Um…so, you’re not mad?” Gavin asked.

I rotated my head so he could see the seriousness in my expression. “You kids do what makes you happy, and I’ll be happy.”

Then a thought occurred to me, and I grunted, rubbing a hand over my gray beard. “Your grandpa is never gonna let me live this down.”

Jensen looked back at me over his shoulder, his lips curved into a shit-eating grin. “Family dinners are gonna be really fucking interesting.”

“Language, Jensen,” Alyssa admonished, drawing our attention as she stepped into the garage from the door to the house.

Jensen ducked his head and mumbled, “Sorry, Mom.”

She nodded, then cocked her head as she studied Gavin expectantly. “Did you tell him?”

I was pleased to see Gavin’s relieved smile when he answered her. “Yeah. He’s complaining about the shi—uh, crap he’s gonna take from Grandpa.”

Alyssa’s face turned soft as her green eyes came to rest on me. “I told you he would be fine with it.”

Warmth spread through my chest, knowing my wife had such faith in me. She knew how much I loved our family and hadn’t doubted I would support our kids, no matter what.

I winked at her, and she sashayed toward me, her sexy hips swaying and making my mouth water. It didn’t matter how long we’d been together, my wife was hot as fuck and I wanted her more every day.

“Ugh. They have that look,” Jensen grunted. “Let’s get out of here, bro.”

A grin spread across my face when the boys hotfooted into the house, leaving me alone with my wife.

“Come here, baby,” I encouraged while crooking a finger.

Alyssa took her sweet time, and I raised an eyebrow. “Tryin’ to earn a spanking later?”

Her expression turned completely innocent. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

She was only a foot away, so I reached out and captured her around the waist, pulling her into my lap. “Uh-huh. And how long have you known that our son wanted to be a cop?”

“Since yesterday morning,” she admitted. “I told Gavin to trust what a good man you are and that you would be fine with it. He wanted to wait until today so he could tell you in person.”
