Yeah, he did. But he’d never thought of Grace like that. She was mature. Grounded. Beautiful.

“I’ll speak to you later,” Michael told his brother.

“Take care of yourself,” Josh told him. “Just do that, okay?”

“Yeah. I’ll try.”

ChapterTwenty-Six

“What’s going on?”Scott asked Grace when she knocked on her parents' front door. She’d spent the last ten minutes in her car at the bottom of their driveway, trying to figure out what the hell she was going to say to them.

And she still had no clue. She just wanted to make this better.

“What do you mean?” She frowned.

“Mom and Dad are having a huge fight in the kitchen. I heard your name mentioned. I tried to butt in, but then they both turned on me.”

She let out a long breath. “They’re fighting?”

“Like fucking bears.”

“Don’t swear,” she said automatically, the words ingrained from when she was a teenager and Scott was learning all the ways to drive their mom up the wall.

Grace had always been the peacemaker. The one who kept things calm. She knew how to play that role, how to make everybody happy.

But this new role? The one where she ripped everybody apart? She hated it.

“I…” She shook her head. “It’s about that guy. The one I told you about.”

Scott blinked. “Your mystery man?”

Grace nodded.

“Dad knows who it is?”

“He found us.”

Scott looked at her uncomprehendingly.

“Together,” she added.

His eyes widened. “Oh, shit.” He held the door open, and she stepped inside. Closing it softly, he followed her down the hallway, the echo of their parents’ argument filling the air.

“Who is it then?” Scott asked. “Does dad know him? Is it someone from the distillery?”

Reaching the door to the kitchen, she turned around to look at her little brother, and shook her head. “It’s Michael.”

“Who’s Michael?”

She would have laughed if there was any humor left in her body. Even her brother couldn’t remember who Michael was.

“Michael Devlin.”

Scott frowned. “Like our cousin Michael?” he asked.

“That’s him.” She nodded. “Mia’s son.”

Scott’s brows raised into his hair line. “Is that even legal?”
