The next letter came by courier at lunchtime.

Dear Grace,

The second time I saw you I was lost for words. I stood at the bar trying to figure out how to get you away from your friends and talk to you. You had a smile that lit up the room, and every guy in that bar noticed.

I wanted to tell them that I had dibs. That I’d given you my cab. That it wasn’t just physical attraction that drew me to you. It was more.

It still is.

I’d been on edge that day. A bad meeting, a damn rainstorm, and then I’d had to wait almost an hour to get another cab. But as soon as you walked over to me, your eyes rolling, your smile tight, that all disappeared.

And then you disappeared. I never realized a soul could ache until I couldn’t find you after that night.

And when I saw you atChairsand realized who you were? It felt like fate was laughing at me.

What I didn’t know was that she was giving me a gift. You.

And I want it back. I want you back. I want to spend the rest of my life showing you how much you are worth fighting for.

Have a good lunch. I love you.

Michael xx

This time she cried. Not sad tears, but emotional ones. They felt cleansing as they poured down her cheeks. And yes, he’d sent her lunch again, but this time she couldn’t eat it.

She was pining too much for him.

You can stop fighting. It’s a knockout already. Please come see me tonight. – Grace xx

And of course he called her instead of replying. A man of words, not letters. She picked it up, breathing out a hello, her face still damp with tears.

“Friday. I’ll see you Friday. We’ll make it one week not two.”

“Why not now?” she asked. “I need you.”

He let out a soft breath. “I’ll always be here when you need me. If you want me to come over, I will. I’m done making decisions for you. I know you can make them perfectly fine by yourself. Say the word and I’ll be there.”

She pulled her lip between her teeth. Three days. It felt like forever, but she knew it would pass quickly. And maybe part of her was enjoying this attention from him.

Even if she was aching for him to hold her all night.

“Friday,” she said. “Where?”

“You’ll find out. And Grace?”

“Yes?”

“Friday isn’t the end. It’s only the beginning.”

She smiled through her tears. “I like the sound of that.”

The next two days passed in a whirlwind of notes and gifts, and with each one, the wound in her chest closed a little more. Grace had spoken to Michael so many times, but she hadn’t seen him once.

Her heart was yearning. She hoped his was, too.

By Friday afternoon, she was getting jittery. He hadn’t told her where to meet him or what to wear. She was closing up her laptop, ready to go home, when her mom walked into her office with a huge smirk on her face.
