He opened the box, the rain dampening the diamond, but taking away none of its luster. “Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?” he asked.

His mom gasped. A few others did too.

Grace put her hand on her chest, where her heart was, her eyes wide with shock. He liked that he’d surprised her. He’d been almost certain that Sabrina would give it away.

Another reason to do it sooner rather than later, if there weren’t enough already.

“Are you going to answer him?” Sabrina whispered, and everybody laughed.

“Yes. Of course.” Grace was breathless.

“Yes, you’re going to answer him, or yes, you’re going to marry him?” Sabrina rolled her eyes. “We’re getting soaked here.”

“Yes, I’ll marry you.” Grace only had eyes for Michael. “Was there ever any doubt?”

“Thank God,” Sabrina muttered. “Now, can we go inside?”

Michael stood and walked over to where Grace was standing, still shocked, taking her hand and sliding the ring onto her slender finger. People were milling around them, congratulating them, but she was still staring straight into his eyes.

“I love you,” he told her.

A fat tear ran down her cheek.

“Come here.” He pulled her close. She was soaked through. So was he. But then he kissed her and the rain was forgotten.

At least until a crash of thunder filled the air.

“Come on, let’s go inside,” he told her. And it was like he’d waved a magic wand because everybody moved. He held Grace’s hand. The one with his ring on it. The one that showed everybody how much she was loved.

“You okay?” he asked.

She nodded.

“Can you say something? Because I’m getting freaked out here.”

“Je t’aime,” she whispered.

“Moi aussi,” he told her, because it was true. He loved her so much and he needed her to know it. “Now, let’s get inside and dry off before I have to argue with you over a cab.”
