Michael closed the door, walking around to the driver’s side, sliding into his seat and starting the engine up.

“Oh God, that feels bad,” Sabrina muttered.

“What feels bad?”

“This car.”

“Just hold on. It’s only a few minutes.”

“I can’t,” she told him. “I’m gonna…”

“Hold the bag,” he told her, but it was too late. She was sick everywhere. On herself, on the damn car.

Even on the bag. Not in it, though.

Shit.

“I didn’t mean to,” she wailed. “I feel so bad.”

“It’s okay. Just try to breathe.” He pressed the button to open her window, hoping the fresh air would help her and the stench. “You breathing?”

“I’m trying.”

Thank God. “Let’s go home.”

“I can’t. What if mom sees me?” Sabrina asked, her words a stutter. “Please take me to Grace.”

“What?”

“Her house is two minutes away. Take me there. She’ll help.”

Michael stared out of the windshield. “It’s late. She’ll be asleep.”

“S’okay. She’s helped me out before.”

She had?It was news to him. And yet not a surprise.

“You have Grace’s number in your phone?” he asked, because there was no way he was turning up without talking to her first.

“Uhuh.” Sabrina sniffed and nodded at the same time. The smell wafting off of her was making his stomach turn. After three attempts, she unlocked her phone with her Face ID and passed it to him. He found Grace’s contact number and pressed call.

It took five rings for her to answer and he felt like an asshole for waking her up.

Hated even more that he might not be. She could have someone there. Like the guy who was flirting with her at the cookout.

His stomach turned at the thought of it.

“Hello?” her voice was soft. It wrapped around him like a blanket. “Sabrina, is everything okay?”

“It’s Michael,” he said.

“Oh.” She sounded confused. “I thought it was Sabrina calling.”

“I’m using her phone. I need a big favor.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Sabrina’s drunk as a skunk. And she’s thrown up all over herself. Can I bring her to your place?”

There wasn’t a moment’s hesitation from her. “Of course.”

Relief washed over him. It was weird how relieved those two words made him. “Thank you. I owe you big time.”
