It made it feel like less of a lie. More real.

She smiled and lifted a sandwich to his lips. “Eat.”

He did as he was told, taking a bite and damn, it was delicious. The beef was tender, the pickles sharp, and his stomach rumbled with appreciation.

“It tastes almost as good as you.”

“Let’s not compare me to beef.” She lifted a brow and pushed the sandwich toward him again. “Or this will end up in your face.”

When they’d finished eating, Michael insisted on cleaning up.

“You’ve been well trained,” Grace said as he slid the plates into the dishwasher.

“I’ve lived by myself for a while. Turns out that dishes don’t magically clean themselves.”

“What about when you were married?” she asked. “Did you do the dishes, then?”

“Of course I did.” His brows raised. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“I don’t know. I just wondered…” Grace trailed off. “I guess I find it hard thinking about you being with somebody else.”

“At my age, wouldn’t it be weird if I hadn’t been?”

“Yes. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.”

He smiled. Her jealousy was soft, not angry. And he’d experienced angry before. “I don’t want to be anywhere but here. With you. Now.” He closed the dishwasher and wiped his hands on the towel. “So, what are tonight’s plans?”

“Bed?” she asked, putting her hand on her hip. And damn, he was tempted. But between the food and the sex and the long day driving his mom to the hospital and back was taking its toll.

“Let’s watch a movie.”

“Now?” She blinked. “Don’t you want to…”

“Yes. But I also want to spend time with you. Find out what you like. You can choose.”

He watched as she walked to her living room, her hips swaying. She looked good in just a tank and panties.

She looked good in anything. That was the problem.

“This had better be a Netflix and Chill situation,” she shouted out.

He grinned. “Depends on how interesting the movie is.”

The sound of her TV switching on echoed through from the living room. He grabbed a soda and a beer from her refrigerator and walked in, passing the beer to Grace.

“You not drinking?”

“I have to drive.”

Grace frowned. She was good at hiding it, but her natural reaction still came through. Maybe that’s the other reason he wanted to watch something with her. To prove to her he wasn’t here for only one thing.

She was worth more than that. So much more. But he had to go home tonight. He would not have the whole town talking about her.

“So, what movies do you like?” she asked him.

“I’m usually easy.” He shrugged.

“Chick flicks? Action movies?” She twisted the cap off the beer, lifting it to her lips. “Or something arty?” There was a bead of beer on her bottom lip. She pulled her lip between her teeth, flicking the moisture away with her tongue. “Oh this is perfect. We should watch this.”
