In so many ways, she was right. He had fought back. Had found a job he loved. But now he was starting to resent it. Getting annoyed by those middle-of-the-night calls, those early morning Zoom meetings.

The thought of having to leave to go back to London.

Yes, his mom was exhausted today, but her doctor was pleased with her progress. She was almost halfway through this course of therapy. If it went well, she wouldn’t need another.

She’d be in recovery and he’d be going home.

Whateverhomemeant.

His mom’s phone rang. She pulled it out of her purse and smiled. “It’s Cam. Do you mind if I take this?”

“Be my guest.” Michael stood, partly because the low bench was making his legs ache, but mostly to give her some privacy.

And yeah, maybe to check his own phone for messages, too.

He smiled when he saw one there. He’d stored Grace’s contact as ‘G’. Nothing else. He didn’t want anybody to see her messages and get the wrong idea.

Or the right one.

I’m bored. Entertain me. Tell me what you used to do in the olden days before Netflix and Chill. – G

He rolled his eyes. She found their age gap amusing. He probably would too if he was the younger one.

We were too busy hunting wooly mammoths to think about Netflix. – M

I knew it! Just like I knew nobody had sex until 2015. Or booty calls. – G

He rolled his eyes. She’d been calling him her booty call ever since he’d started waiting for her to call before he left the house. Making sure the coast was clear on both of their sides.

He could hear his mom laughing softly. Fuck, he shouldn’t be doing this here. And yet his whole body felt warm in a way that had nothing to do with the sunshine.

It was her. All her. And she’d sent him another message.

How did booty calls work before cellphones, anyway? Did people use carrier pigeons? Smoke signals? I’m intrigued now… – G

I have no idea. I’ve always had a cell phone. And be careful, or I’ll show you exactly how young I can be tonight. – M

Promise? – G

“Are you messaging your friends?”

He jumped at the sound of his mom’s voice.

“Ah yeah. Talking about playing some pool tonight.”

“That’s nice.” She smiled. “Cam’s insisting I go to bed as soon as we get home, especially since we’re going out to the movies tomorrow.”

“AndChairson Friday,” he said. “You’ll be out two nights in a row.”

“I used to love to go out every night.” She sighed. “Never get old, sweetheart. It’s boring.”

“I’m already old.” He smiled at the memory of Grace’s teasing, sliding his phone into his pocket because there was no way he wanted his mom to see her messages appearing on the screen.

“That makes me ancient. And we can’t have that. Come on, let’s go home. I want to sit in the yard when we get there and enjoy the last of the sun.”

He put his arm out for her and she took it. “I’ll probably head out again tonight.”

“Good. Enjoy yourself.”
