“Something come up? You’ve got to go to the office?”

There’s a hint of frustration in his tone, but he’s the most supportive spouse in the world.

All along the walls, we have photos we’ve taken on exotic locations around the world. We’ve traveled to every single continent in the last five years, with the exception of Antarctica.

“Doctor’s appointment,” I mumble.

Fisher halts. “Everything okay?”

“Annual appointment.”

He deposits my suitcase in our bedroom and returns to the kitchen.

“Heard a rumor,” Fisher says, stopping in front of the island.

“What’s that?”

“You’re being considered for another promotion.” His warm, strong hands caress my hips, and I lean back, into him. It feels so good to be home.

“You go to lunch with Bauer?”

“Please. Brought him lunch.”

“How’s he doing?”

“Fine if you don’t count his blood pressure.” He cages me in against the counter. “Did you accept?”

“Their offer?” I ask for clarification as I spin in his arms to face him. He blinks, his expression unreadable. “I asked for a more strategic position.”

“Really?” His disbelief is mildly humorous. “But you love the field.”

“I do.” I nod and rub my fingers through his beard. “I did. I liked it more when you were in the field with me.” It’s a tiring life. It’s not meant for forever. I’ve accomplished what I wanted and then some. I’ll always want a career. Ideally in intelligence. But now, in my thirties, I find myself wanting more. I have Fisher and a robust chosen family with Arrow, but a strategic role opens up options. I pull his hand to my lips and press them to his knuckles. “But I wanted to talk to you about something.”

“Yeah?”

“Well, tomorrow is my gynecologist appointment.” He pulls back to better see me. His thumb strokes my throat, and I lean into his touch. “What would you think if I had her remove my IUD?”

His eyebrows narrow over his nose. “Seriously?”

The question is breathy, and if I’m hearing him correctly, hopeful.

“Yeah. I mean, it won’t happen immediately—”

My feet leave the floor, and he grips me so tight my ribs constrict. He pulls back, and it’s a look I recognize as him double-checking he read me right. “No more field work?”

“I like strategy.”

He spins me in a circle, not kissing me, just looking at me in complete disbelief.

“It’s not going to happen immediately,” I say. “And, you know, I might choose later on to go back in the field. And if it’s not something you want, I get it. It’s just—”

His lips cover mine. And then he backs up, holding my face between his palms.

“I love you. So much. You know that?”

The dark blue irises I love so much glimmer beneath the light.

“You really want this?” He nods. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
