Hmm. Interesting.

“That I can do.” I nod, and once again Milo makes a face.

“You don’t have to—“

“If you’re telling me not to, then I won’t, sir. This is your home, your rules. But if you want me to feed him, I’m happy to. All I’d be doing instead is reading,” I say, without adding that I’d be studying a file on him.

“Okay,” Milo relents when Cooper pouts up at him, not saying a word, but not needing to. Those eyes said it for him. Big blue orbs of cuteness. Sometimes I suspect kids have hypnotic powers.

As I pass Milo, I pause. “Kids were never my thing, before.” I shrug. “But Cooper is a special kid. You’ve done a great job raising such a respectful young boy,” I say, patting his shoulder.

I don’t wait for him to respond. He doesn’t need to.

Step one. Show him not all women want something from him. Build up his confidence in himself as a father and a man.

As I turn the corner, I see Bellamy standing in his doorway. He no doubt just heard my words. He doesn’t know I know him, though, so I hold my hand out, even as Cooper stomps his foot from the end of the hall.

“True,” I introduce myself, and Bellamy takes my hand in his large one.

“Bellamy,” he says, nodding his chin in the direction Milo just ran off in. “He’s not interested in anything. With anyone,” he says, and I frown. I already know this but…

“Okay? I was under the impression I was hired to take care of Cooper. Is there some kind of hidden addendum to the contract? Service Milo?” I snip, matching Bellamy’s ego. He thinks because he’s hot, he can intimidate women. Step one for Bellamy, show him he can find his equal in a woman.

Bellamy smirks. “Well, aren’t you feisty?”

“No, not really. I just know when I’m being baited and disrespected. I’m not here to sleep with my boss,” I say, pointing down the hall toward the surprisingly patient child. “I’m here for him. Cooper is my only priority,” I say, before marching off.

Given what I know about Bellamy, there’s a chance he’ll take that as a challenge. What I said is true. But it’s not like I can tell him I’m also here to help him and the other two find true love. A more permanent maternal figure for little Cooper. For now, I’ll be his best friend. The fairy he once knew.

Someday, when he’s older, he’ll think it was all make-believe. But for now…

Sure, showing the kid my wings is technically a no-no. But I had to win him over, and quickly.

Technically, I’m more like an angel or even a fae. Not so much a fairy.

“Okay kid, show me the kitchen!” I announce, and Cooper hops across the room like he’s got springs in his shoes.

This won’t be so bad after all.

It’s been two days, and so far, everything is going smoothly. I haven’t seen much of anyone except Coop. And I haven’t even met Clay officially.

Cooper has been a dream child, until this moment.

We were baking cookies when he accidentally knocked over the bowl of unmixed ingredients.

“Oops, let's get that—” I watch with wide eyes as Cooper grabs the entire carton of eggs, throws them to the ground, and screams.

“Stupid, stupid!” he yells, and then starts sobbing. “I’m sorry, True. I’m sorry!” He takes off down the hall, and I let him go.

“What was—” Milo starts, and then sees the mess. “Fuck.” He moves to start cleaning up, but I stop him.

“Leave it, and go back to work, please, sir.” I step around the mess and push his chest. “This is between Cooper and me. I know what I’m doing.” I nod my head in the direction of his office. He looks down at the mess, fingers twitching like it physically pains him not to clean it up, before he nods and turns away.

Cooper may not be a part of my assignment, but I am a Cupid with compassion, what can I say?

I grab a plastic cup and fill it with a little bit of water, then head to Cooper’s room. He left his door open, so I pause there, watching as he attempts to regulate himself.
