“Fine…”

“Let the girl be, Terry.” I hear my stepfather say, seconds before a loud smack rings in the air. Oh, ew…he totally just smacked her butt. Gross.

“Mom wants to talk to you!” I yelp, shoving my phone into Holden’s hand when I find him in the kitchen. His blue eyes go wide. Then he sees my bikini and spins away until his back is facing me.

Uh, should I be offended?

“Hey–” Holden barely gets a word out before I hear Mom’s voice chirping into his ear. “Of course… I’d do anything for Rose. Yeah, I know… I know he’s–” Holden chuckles, shaking his head. Mom must be on one today, hardly letting the guy speak. “Okay, I will. Love you too.”

Holden hangs up, turning to give me a look as he hands me the phone.

“Dad dragged her away. I hung up before they scarred me for life,” he cringes.

“Yeah, I can’t blame you. They can’t keep their hands off each other, even for our sake.” I shake my head but can’t hold my smile back. “Can’t believe it took them twenty-five years of friendship to realize they’re meant to be together. They act like horny teens.”

“They’re madly in love, that's for sure.”

I nod my agreement until I remember the bikini I’m wearing and start retreating. Thankfully, if he notices, he lets me run without a comment.

When I’m safely in my room, I call Nissa, my best friend since our first dance class together at age seven.

She’ll save me.

From myself.

Nissa knows all my secrets. Including my deepest and darkest.

“Hey!” she answers on the first ring.

“I need to get out of here. Tonight. Please tell me you have something to distract me!” I beg. It’s a Friday night. She must have plans I can invade.

“Yes! Actually. How do you feel about a blind date?” The mischief in her voice is enough to ease my nerves, and I’m already agreeing without getting a single detail first.

CHAPTER NINE

“That Way” by Tate McRae and Jeremy Zucker

ROSE

Hey, Blue,

So I finally made it to my new home, but there’s one little problem. I had to move in with my stepbrother and his two best friends, who hate me, as well as three other frat boys, but those three are harmless.

Well, Fallon is a bit terrifying, but as far as I can tell, he’s harmless. I hope. I heard he sleepwalks, though, so I sleep with my bedroom door locked.

It’s been two awkward as fuck days, and I can’t stand it! They walk around half-naked. Even Romeo barely wears clothes, and despite his reputation, I know for a damn fact he isn’t sleeping around!

But him I can deal with. Do you know what I can’t deal with? Holden…shirtless, pantless, walking around dripping wet after a shower. You’re one of the few people on this planet that knows my secrets, just you and Nissa. If anyone ever found these emails, I would deny them until the day I die. But Blue? I’m dying here.

I need to go buy a vibe. Sorry, TMI. But you deserve it after telling me about getting jerked off at the movies.

Oh, and to make things worse, I just got ghosted. Again. So I guess you were right about Derek. He wanted more sex than I could offer. Which was none because of the virginity no one wants to take. I thought if he got to know me that I could tell him about the dilemma, and he’d help me solve the problem! But no. He thought I was going to end up being some kind of wild sex vixen. That was my bad. I branded myself wrong, but come on! When I was in high school, everyone and their literal brother wanted to be the first to pop my cherry!

Why am I surrounded by college-aged men, in their prime ho phase, and none of them want to fuck me?!

Why am I such a loser? Wait! I’m not even a loser! I can’t even lose my V-card!

This is embarrassing.
