Why is this so sexy? Ren helps take care of kittens? I think my panties just combusted.

“You two kids head to the room across the hall. Those little furballs need a good fluffing before their photo shoot,” Sam says, gesturing out the door we just walked in.

I follow Ren, wondering if he’s as excited by kitties as I am.

“So, these babies are about to be eight weeks old. If no one claims them online, then they’ll get snagged up at the event at the local shelter,” Ren informs me as we enter the other room. Just like the first one, it’s filled with cat toys, trees, and scratchers, as well as a table with grooming tools laid out.

I grab a brush, plop down on a pillow, and just wait for the swarm to come.

It’s a dream of mine to be smothered by kittens, and these little ones do not disappoint. They charge me, climbing and clawing their way into my lap.

“I’m not religious, but if someone said there was a heaven filled with kittens, I’d totally convert,” I joke, making Ren chuckle.

“That sounds like a good way to get yourself into trouble,” Ren teases, and I shrug.

“If this is what my afterlife looks like, maybe it won’t be so bad.” I swallow thickly. “I have a lot of death anxiety,” I whisper, then laugh when a little ball of fur pounces, wrapping its body around my wrist and gnawing on my thumb.

“I get that.” There’s a long stretch of quiet, but then Ren clears his throat and grabs a few things off the table before sitting beside me. “They need claw caps, bows, and clean faces.”

We get to work after that, focusing on our task. Watching this sexy-as-sin hockey player groom kittens is doing something to me.

I catch myself staring at him more than once. I can’t help it. The man is fucking gorgeous. And right now, he’s petting a little floof of white.

“You’re glaring at the cat like you’re jealous,” Ren teases, and I shrug.

“Maybe I am.” I don’t deny it. I’ve already been caught.

“Do you want me to pet your kitty, Rose?” Ren says suggestively, making me bark out a laugh, startling the kittens around me.

“That was the worst line ever!” I scold, and he snorts.

“What about…”

“No. Not in front of the children!” I pretend to cover the ears of one of the kittens, making Ren laugh.

“I don’t think they speak English,” Ren points out, and I shake my head.

“You don’t know that.”

“Fine. But once we leave, I’ve got a few lines I want to try out.” Ren winks, making me snort.

“I bet my lines are better,” I challenge, and he scoffs.

“The virgin? You think the virgin has better lines? Nah. You couldn’t even introduce yourself to two dudes at the bar! There’s no way.” Ren shakes his head, looking way too cocky.

“Bet!” I demand.

“Fine. Bet.”

Two hours later, I’m covered in fur, glue, and glitter, and I’m not even a little upset about any of it.

Ren has to practically drag me away when the other volunteers show up to take our place. I almost don’t take the offered lint roller. I like being covered in fur and glitter, thank you very much.

“This was very effective,” I decide, once we’re back in Ren’s car.

“Yeah?”
