“I have to pee,” I eventually say. In order to hold my tongue, I sipped my drink… I ran out quickly. Nash wrinkles his nose, and I roll my eyes. “Oh, hush, I had that third Sprite in like two minutes.”

I’m in the bathroom washing my hands, when the door opens, and the bride comes rushing in. She’s crying.

“Oh, no!” I say, rushing to her. “What's wrong?!” I look her over, thinking she’s had a malfunction, but she just gasps.

“His-his mother!” she sobs, and my eyes go wide. “The controlling narcissistic bitch!” She turns, showing me the skirt of her wedding gown. Red wine. I grab several paper towels and start dabbing the excess liquid, but it’s no use.

I let her cry as I clean her up the best I can. At least it wasn’t down the front. When I’ve done all I can, I stand, grab more paper towels, and tug her hands away from her face.

“Waterproof makeup?” I ask because it’s hardly smudged. She nods, not even seeming to realize a perfect stranger is tending to her. “Does Huston not see through her?” I ask, wondering if that's what's really upsetting her.

“Oh, he does! But what can he do?! She owns him. He’s twenty-one, and she pays for his entire life.” Sarah shakes her head. “She paid for this wedding! I don’t even like red!” she cries, referring most likely to the fact that the theme is red and white.

“I’m sorry,” I say, swiping at the new tears before they get the chance to touch any of her makeup.

“I wanted our wedding to be at my parents’ house. Where I grew up. God! Nothing about tonight has gone the way I wanted."

I’ve never thought much about having my own wedding, but I can only imagine how shitty it must have been to have a mother-in-law ruin it.

“Sarah, does Huston love you?” I ask, making her scoff.

“Yes, of course.” She nods, and I grin.

“He’d do anything for you?” I add, and she frowns, nodding again.

“I’d do anything for him,” she adds, and I smile.

“That is already very clear to me,” I say, making her laugh. “Nothing else matters but you two, hun. Not his shitty ass mom, not this venue, not the red…just you and him.”

“You’re right.” She sniffs, lifting her chin. When she starts looking around frantically, I pause.

“Uh, should I be worried you’re searching for a murder weapon right now?” I ask, and she barks a laugh.

“I’m not that crazy.” She shakes her head. “I need to get out of here. My mom will understand. I’ll text her.” She starts nibbling her lip. “Help me?” she asks, and I nod.

“What do you need?”

* * *

“Nash…” I whisper as I sneak up beside him at the bar.

“Took you long enough–”

“Listen, I need you to grab your brother and covertly get him to the front of the hotel.”

“Uh…what?” He frowns, and I sigh, looking around for any eavesdroppers.

“The bride is running, but she’s taking the groom with her. I have to go hunt down her maid of honor, so she can grab the bride's phone and shit, so I need you to sneak the groom out,” I tell him, and he blinks at me.

“Yeah, alright,” he finally says, and I nod.

“Good, go!” I hustle to the table, pull up the seat next to the maid of honor, Chelsea, and lean in. I fill her in on the details of our mission, and she nods.

“His mom is the worst,” Chelsea says, and I agree.

“No arguments there. Now, hurry.”

“Nancy,” I hiss, startling her. She gives me a look like I just peed on her skirt. “Sarah is running, Nash is grabbing Huston. I need you to distract your mother.” Sarah assured me Nancy would help…
