“Not sure if that was the shocking part, Ho,” Nash chuckles, and I spin to face him.

“Why didn’t you talk him out of this!” I demand, and Nash shrugs.

“We wanted you to be our girlfriend,” he says like that's obvious.

“I bought the flowers,” Ren adds. I stand here silently for another moment and then laugh. I laugh so hard my eyes fill with tears, and I double over as I gasp for air.

“Now might be a bad time to add that I also told my coach… Not that that mattered much since I was already benched. And because I graduate this year. So,” Holden offers with a shrug, and I just laugh harder.

“How is…this…our lives?!” I cry out, laughing my ass off.

“You never answered,” Nash points out, and I stand, shaking my head.

“Of course, I’ll be your girlfriend!”

EPILOGUE

“Butterflies” by MAX & Ali Gatie

ROSE

It’s been one year since Nix passed, and I still think about him every day.

My nephew grins, drool running down his chin while I bounce him on my knee.

He’s five months old and the cutest little butterball I have ever seen in my life.

He looks so much like Nix that it makes my heart ache in the best way. The world still has a small piece of my twin brother, and I’ll forever be grateful for that. Big green eyes and a happy grin… I’m obsessed with him.

Milly snorts a snore beside me, waking herself up, and I laugh when Phoenix, named after his daddy, giggles at the sound.

“Go nap,” I tell her, nodding my head toward the stairs. She’s staying with my parents right now in my old room, and even though they help her as much as they can, she’s still exhausted.

I can’t imagine being a single mom. She’s killing it, though. It’s clear to see that my nephew is the light of her life.

“You ready?” Nash asks as he takes the seat Milly just vacated. I nod.

“Game’s starting!” I shout, and Ren plops down on my other side.

“Coming!” Mom yells as she rushes into the living room, decked out in hockey merch. “There he is! Number twenty-six!” Mom cheers, and I bite my lip. This isn’t Holden’s first NHL game, but it is the first we’ve all gotten together to watch.

Number twenty-six, in honor of my brother. A little piece of me loves him more, every time I see it. Nash and Ren decided they wanted to take a different path after they graduated. But not Holden. He was always going to be in the NHL.

“He’s starting,” I whisper, watching as Holden remains on the ice.

“Fuck, yeah,” Ren cheers.

“Language!” I scold, but he just chuckles.

“He doesn’t know I cussed.”

“Practice.” I shrug.

“Yeah, alright, Candycane,” Ren surrenders, and I pass him baby Phoenix.

“Need to pee.” I hurry off, and Nash grunts.

“Again?” he asks, and I pause…he’s noticed?
