The only thing that I ever feared about death was leaving you. I’m sorry I left you. I’m sorry we didn’t get to grow old together.

You are by far the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you with all my guts. Not just my heart, but every single cell that made up my being.

I need you to do me a huge favor now, sweetheart. Promise me that you’ll keep living. I might be done, but you’re not. Don’t lie down in the grave beside me. You run far and fast from it.

Never forget me, but don’t live in the past.

You were my forever, baby, but I was not yours. I was a stop on your way to forever. Joy is still out there, waiting for you. So, you go out there and find it.

I know he won’t be as handsome or as talented as me, and I’m sorry you have to settle, but if he can win your heart, then he must be something special. Something special is what you deserve.

I’ll see you again one day, and until then, be happy, sweetheart.

And remember to change the batteries in the smoke detectors every six months.

Forever yours,

Mike

I close my eyes and hold the letter to my chest. It is the closure that I needed, and I’m glad I waited until now to read it.

“Thank you,” I whisper into the empty room.

And I know in my heart that wherever he is, he hears me.

Two Months Later

Caleb has Kaela by the hand, leading her down the aisle. He is dressed in a tux, and Kaela is wearing an adorable white dress with a tulle skirt.

He helps her pick the rose petals from the basket she is carrying and tosses them as they make their way toward us.

She is the cutest flower girl I’ve ever seen even though she does look scared as hell.

When she stops halfway to the altar and refuses to let Caleb coax her any farther, I step away from my brothers and bend to one knee.

Kaela spots me and takes off running and leaps into my arms.

I pick her up, and when Caleb makes it to the two of us, I step back between Langford and Garrett, and Caleb takes his place beside Graham.

The music changes, and everyone stands.

Leona and Taeli appear at the end of the aisle, and Leona proudly walks her daughter down and gives her hand to my big brother, who is crying like a baby at the sight of his bride in her wedding gown.

My eyes fall on Anna, seated in the second row, and I can read the pain on her face as they exchange vows and rings.

And it hurts me that she is hurting.

After the ceremony, the party moves to the deck of the winery, where Garrett’s band is set up.

I find Anna, who is removing the skirt from around Kaela’s waist.

“Dance with me?” I ask.

She hands Kaela off to Mom and follows me onto the dance floor.

“You look beautiful,” I whisper in her ear.
