“Thanks,” she says.

Once we are on the road, I start giving her an overview of the town.

“Misty Mountain is about nine miles from the middle of town, where you’ll find the town hall and the festival grounds. Isley, Langford’s wife, is our new mayor, and her office is in town hall. Market Square is a strip of shops. It has your normal things—ice cream, pizza, and Well-Bred Café, which is owned by my brother Garrett’s fiancée. It has the best coffee around. Especially if you like those fancy latte things.”

“Garrett Tuttle,” she states.

“Yeah, that loser,” I say.

She laughs.

“Coyote Creek runs through the valley, and my parents own Rocky Pass Vacation Rentals, which includes cabins sprinkled in the mountains and a large campground and RV park on the creek.”

I pull into the parking lot of The Hot Little Biscuit.

“Now, I know you said you wanted an omelet, but if you truly want to experience the valley, you have to try the biscuits and gravy,” I suggest.

“I have a veggie omelet every morning,” she says.

“Every morning? Why?”

“I’m just used to following a strict training diet. I guess old habits die hard.”

“Well, you’re about to kill it dead.”

“Let’s do it,” she says.

We hop out and walk to the sidewalk when I hear my name being called.

I look up to see Kinley Adams headed in our direction.

“Hi, Morris. I was just coming to look for you. Your mom said you were working up on the mountain today.”

“Yeah, I am working actually. Langford has me showing Zoey here around today. She’ll be running the ski school this year.”

“Well, shoot. I was just heading up to bring you this and see your new place.”

She hands me a thermos. I take the lid off and smell it.

“Mmm, hazelnut coffee.”

“Of course. I know it’s your favorite,” Kinley says.

“Thank you.”

I look to my side. “Zoey, this is Kinley Adams. Her mom and mine are friends. She went to California for college and recently moved back to town.”

Kinley extends her hand to Zoey. “What Morris here meant to say is that we’ve been friends since we were in diapers.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Zoey says.

Kinley looks back at me. “Guess you’ll have to show me around the resort another time.”

“Yeah, I’ll give you a call.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

Kinley walks off, and we continue to the entrance.
