“Everything you do is my business. It will always be my business,” he whispers angrily.

“Whoa there, big fella. What are you doing?” Joanna asks.

“Go away,” Tobias demands without looking back at her.

Joanna is taken aback. “I don’t think so. You’re the one who needs to go,” she snaps.

“Zoey, tell your friend you’re fine,” he commands through gritted teeth.

“No,” I say.

“Zoey.”

“I want you to leave,” I tell him.

“You heard her. Now, back the fuck up before I call for backup from the rest of the staff,” Joanna barks.

Tobias puts his hands in the air and takes a step backward. “No need for that,” he says.

Then, he looks at Joanna and smiles. “I’m sorry. It’s a habit to be overly protective of my little Zoey. I didn’t mean any disrespect.”

Joanna narrows her eyes at him. “She’s not little anymore. I think she can protect herself, and she can definitely spend time with whomever the hell she wants.”

“Of course,” he says charmingly.

He turns back to me. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Zoey. Sweet dreams.”

I don’t speak as he leisurely descends the steps and makes his way through the crowd. All of them fawn over him a second time as he goes.

Joanna’s eyes watch him, and then they come to me. “What the fuck was that?”

“Nothing,” I rasp.

“That wasn’t nothing. Let’s go inside. We’re going to talk,” she demands.

I unlock the door, and we go inside.

The dam breaks, and I tell her everything.

Once it’s back on his deck, we share a beer while Anna puts Kaela down for the night, and then I head home.

Scooter, Clay, and a few others who are still meandering around outside try to lure me over to the firepit, but I see that the light is still on in Zoey’s cabana, so I wave them off and make my way to her door.

I raise my fist to knock when I hear loud voices, and I lean in to listen.

“Don’t you get it? It’s my word against his. He’ll never admit to anything,” Zoey cries.

“He only has as much control as you allow him to have. Be brave,” Joanna tells her.

“Brave? I don’t want to be brave. I want to scream. I want to pitch a fit. I want to crawl under a rock.”

I grab the knob, and the lock isn’t engaged, so I pull the door open.

Joanna looks at me over Zoey’s shoulder, and I see relief wash over her.
