All the way up until some rotten, dark-haired fucker knocks my sword from my hand. I try to summon a new one at the same time as Kai draws on my power, rendering me without enough to do so. The angel man brings his dagger down, and I throw my hands up using what’s left of my magic to stop it an inch from my eye.

I grind my teeth, grunting as I summon every ounce of strength I have to hold it. It’s impossible to siphon while you use magic at the same time. There’s a balance, a give and take, and at the present, it’s quite the shitty set back.

“Up you go,”Luri sings inside my head and I feel the rumble of her feet before I see her horned nose scoop the man up, flipping him in the air as he screams. She catches him and chomps down, spraying blood everywhere.

“Thank you,” I say, rolling onto my stomach and pushing myself to my feet. My hands swipe at the splatter that now covers my face.

“No need for thanks. That one was seasoned. I’ve had my eye on him for a while.”

“Seasoned?” I ask, my lips parting into a disgusted frown.

“Yeah,”she says as if it’s obvious as she trots off, leaving his detached arm behind.

“With what?”

“You don’t want to know.”I shrug it off, moving on to the next victim. Only when I turn, I find myself in the clearing with the swords of those I love clashing feet away.

Michael’s eyes land on me, knocking Asmo and Kai out of the way and leaving them to ward off his angel counterparts. With slow measured steps, he walks toward me, a fire in his eyes no man or angel should ever know.

“You,” he says, his voice booming around me and making my throat go dry. I suck in a breath, drinking in the metallic stench of blood and the dewy smell of wet grass.

Lucifer slices the throat of another angel, locking eyes with me over Michael’s shoulder. I nod, letting him know I’m ready. My hair and hands ignite as I grip the angel dagger in my hand, steadying my fingers.

“Don’t you look like a spitting image of your mother,” he seethes, as if my genetic makeup is beneath him. I suppose, to him, it is.

“Awww. How reminiscent of you.” His power slithers over me before his sword can strike, but hands grip my shoulders and I’m yanked away.

Alice

Spinning around in the tent we slept in, I find Kai, Asmo, and their father breathing heavily. “What the fuck? I had that!”

“We all need a moment. It’s been hours, Alice, and the man hasn’t shown the first sign of exhaustion.”

“Where’s Finn?” I ask, looking between each of them.

“After what happened at the barrier, we all thought it would be better if he and Eva worked on some of the younger angels. Michael and Gabriel alone could slaughter an army,” Kai says, lifting a canteen to his lips and taking a deep sip.

At first, I believe it to be water, but the alcohol wafts through the air. Hints of butterscotch and rye burn my nose. Whiskey. I open my mouth to say something as a creature wails from outside the tent, and for the life of me, I can’t tell if they’re battle cries or that of death.

“We can’t stay hidden in here,” I say, wringing my fingers. “People are dying and they’ll continue to until we finish this.”

Asmo shakes his head. “We’re hiding. We’re resting for a moment, so we don’t die. It lets them scatter a bit, so we can pick them off easier. Trying to face a group of archangels is a hell of a lot harder than one at a time. They’re like a fucking machine.”

Kai looks at his father, but doesn’t speak a word. They know something… something they’re not sharing with the class.

“What is it?” I ask, demanding them to spit it out.

“If we start to lose—” Lucifer starts to say.

“Don’t worry about it. Now isn’t the time,” Kai says, and he waves Asmo and Lucifer out of the tent. “It’s not important right now, I promise.”

He holds out his hand, beckoning for mine.

“Before we go… I didn’t get a chance to tell you earlier, but if I die, I want you to do your best to find happiness again. I don’t want to be shoved into a glass casket to trap you in your grief. Promise me you’ll move on until we meet again in the next life.” I’m not sure what compels me to say it, now… Maybe it was Lucifer’s mention of us losing or the fact we’ve barely put a dent in this war and my muscles already ache that pushed me to bring it up. Regardless, it needs to be said.

Kai snorts, stepping toward me, his sword around his waist. “I can’t do that. There won’t be a glass casket. I’m not my father, but I can promise you if something happens, our journey together won’t end in this field. There will be not one, but two Moringstars added to my family’s crypt. I know the rawness of what losing you felt like, and I don’t wish to experience it again.” He cups my face, pressing his lips to mine one last time. “I won’t stop you from fighting in this war, but I won’t let you die alone.”
