"I missed you too," I panted when he released me, twisting around and letting the now-cold water hit my back. "Rough day?"

"Shower quickly," he ordered, leaning down and pressing his lips to mine. "I'm going to fuck you again when you're done." His breath fanned across my lips, and I no longer wanted a shower.

JAYDEN

Staringat the ceiling with one arm under my head and the other around Sadie, holding her naked body against mine, I sucked in a deep breath. I had to leave soon, and I knew Sadie would have questions. Questions I wasn't ready to answer yet.

Her finger traced the shapes of the dark ink covering my torso. "Do your tattoos have meaning behind them?" Her finger traced the outline of my initials on my peck. "Or are they just art."

"Just art," I lied. I didn't have time to explain the meanings behind all my tattoos. "Why?"

"I've been thinking about getting one." She sighed. I cocked my head to see her lying in the crock of my arm.

"Something with meaning," I raised my brows. She nodded. "Like, what?" I twisted, and she adjusted so we were facing each other.

"I was thinking about something that represents my family," she said with a sad smile. Leaning in, I pressed my lips to her forehead. I hated seeing the hurt in her eyes.

"Have you thought about what you want?" I pulled back to look at her.

"Well," she paused, chewing her bottom lips as she stared past me, "when we were younger, my oldest brother, Ricky, was really into astrology, so we would all crawl out my bedroom window and lay on the roof and star gaze." She paused again, clearing her throat, I imagined to keep her voice from trembling. "It was one of our favorite things to do. So, I thought about stars, maybe."

My phone vibrated on the nightstand behind me. It was my alarm. Signaling me that it was time for me to leave.

"I have to go." I sighed, pressing my lips to her forehead again before rolling over to disarm the alarm. "I have some things I need to take care of today."

"Like?" She rolled to her back and pulled the black comforter over her naked chest.

"KJ is going to hang out with you for the day," I said, ignoring her question. Pulling on my pants, my gaze flicked up, locking on hers. "Try not to give him a hard time."

"Why do I need a babysitter?"

I pulled my shirt over my head. Kneeling on the bed with one knee, I leaned into her. "I need you to just trust me on this." My gaze scanned over her face searching for understanding, and when she sucked in a deep breath and nodded, I knew she trusted me. Leaning in, I pressed my lips to hers.

I wanted to deepen the kiss and go for round three more than she would ever know, but I had an appointment with her father's original trial lawyer in an hour. It would take me that long or more to reach his office from her house. "I'll see you in a few hours."

She rolled away from me, curling into her blanket, and I closed the door behind me.

"You going to tell me what's going on?" KJ grabbed a white coffee cup from the cabinet above the coffee pot.

My gaze flicked down the hall to Sadie's bedroom and then back to KJ. "Her dad claims he's innocent," I whispered, not wanting Sadie to hear me.

"Jail is full of innocent people," he said, his tone laced with sarcasm. He poured the coffee into the cup before twisting around to face me.

"Yeah." I sighed. "He's accusing her mother of the murders and thinks Sadie could be in danger."

"Do you believe him?"

Shaking my head, my gaze met his. "I'm honestly not sure what I believe. I'm meeting with his lawyer, who is going to let me go through all the old evidence."

"What are you hoping to find?"

I shrugged. "I'm not sure. I just need to know if Sadie is safe or if her mother will come after her."

Pulling my truck in front of the tall brownstone, I shoved it into park before double-checking the building number.
