As I tried to recall the conversation, my gaze flickered into the distance. I shook my head. "No. I think we were arguing."

"Arguing?" KJ stepped into the conversation.

"No, sorry, arguing was the wrong word. We were debating about something. That was kind of our thing." KJ nodded, taking a step back. "Is it important what we were talking about?"

"Everything is important right now," Mr. Silverton said. "We are calling their process into question, and they will call your memory into question as well if we make it to trial. I don't want any surprises, so for the next few weeks, we need to pull those memories out. Talk to Brandon. Maybe he can help you remember." I nodded.

"What about Sadie's mother?" my father asked. "If she gets wind of this, it could put Sadie in danger."

"We've had eyes on Kara for a while now, and she's out of the country," Mr. Silverton smiled. "If she flies in, we'll be alerted immediately, and I will put a security detail on Sadie."

My father nodded.

"If Sadie needs me or anyone else," KJ said. "We are right down the road.

"Brandon is coming up to stay with me this weekend, too," I said. "But if she does return, I would like to know."

"You will know," Mr. Silverton said. "Jayden provided the funds for an entire army if she returns to the States." Of course, he did.

"Please tell Jayden thank you for me," my father said, his eyes swelling with tears. "If he hadn't believed me, none of this would have been possible."

"KJ and I will wait outside and give you two a few minutes," Mr. Silverton said, pushing out of his chair.

KJ moved to stand beside me. "If you want me to stay, I will," KJ said, kneeling beside me.

"I'm okay." I smiled.

He nodded, his gaze flicking to my father.

"I'm so sorry," I said when the door slammed closed, leaving us alone. My chest tightened, fearing he wouldn't be able to forgive me.

"Sadie," he smiled, "this wasn't your fault—none of it. So we aren't going to waste our time with unnecessary apologies. I want to know about you, your life, and this boy Jayden." I smiled. How could I have ever believed that it was my dad who hurt us?

We spent the little time we had talking about me and most of my life, minus the whole Jayden part, before a correction officer barged in, telling us our time was up. I wished I could have hugged him, but they wouldn't let me close enough to him.

We said our goodbye's and the CO escorted me out of the facility where KJ and Mr. Silverton were waiting.

"You okay?" KJ asked, and I nodded. I was okay, and I was glad that was over.

"Well, I will catch you, kids, later." Mr. Silverton smiled. "Sadie, do your best to make that night as clear in your mind as possible." I nodded, and he bolted for his car.

"You ready?" KJ threw an arm across my shoulder. I nodded as we strolled to his truck. "Good, because I'm starving."

I was more determined than ever to remember everything about that night to help my dad and put away my brother's and sister's real killer.

SADIE

When the sunset on Friday, I knew Jayden was long gone. He'd be home by now, settling into his new life with Bella.

He'd respected my wishes, and he'd left. I should be happy, but I wasn't. As much as I wanted to hate him, I didn't.

"Sadie," Brandon said, tapping his fork against his plate.

"Hmm," I hummed, my gaze fixed on my plate as I shuffled around the food.

"Did you hear me?"
