Raising his hands in surrender, he takes another step, and I hold my position. “That’s not what I’m saying, Snowflake. What I mean is, there’s no one there to protectyou.”

Oh.

My heart races at his words, but it doesn’t change my mind on the offer. My thoughts whirl a mile a second trying to piece together a solution, when Shift clears his throat.

“If needed, I could drive them to and from campus and Scarlett could take the classes with Emily,” he offers.

“She would have to be enrolled for that,” Emily mutters, and he shrugs in response.

“If she wants that, then I can make it happen.”

I gape between them, mind blown as I process what he’s saying, what he’s offering.

College?

Me?

Is that even fucking possible?

Even the word feels strange on my tongue, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Not when I have all of the documents he set up for me in my duffel bag.

“Snowflake, it’s an amazing offer, but it’s not something you have to do,” Emmett murmurs, but my gaze is locked on Gray’s as he smiles at me.

“You do you, Sweet Cheeks, we’re here to support you no matter what,” he says, making me smile. I slowly turn my attention back to Emily to find hope in her eyes, and I know the decision without even having to consider it.

“Sign me up.”

* * *

I quickly learnedit’s not as simple as that. There are hoops, jumps, and an entire assault course to get through, but Shift takes it all in his stride. I don’t know who is more excited; him or Emily. I’m sure it’s supposed to be me, but I’m more apprehensive than anything. I’ve spent my entire life hiding, too scared to really live in fear of the unknown, to all of a sudden be thrust into the real world.

Enraptured, I continue to watch every step of the process from my spot in Gray’s lap. A variety of pizzas are sprawled across the coffee table, and as every hour passes, another Ruthless Brother joins us. Emmett sits beside us with Emily to his left. Ryker takes the chair with Axel propped on the arm, while Shift paces back and forth in front of the television, much to Gray’s annoyance.

“Yes, that’s correct, sir. Uh-huh… Yes… I understand… It’s greatly appreciated…”

Nestling deeper into Gray’s lap, his hand strokes leisurely over my back, making me yawn. It’s been hours now, and I still have no clue what’s going on, until Shift suddenly stops in his tracks, back to us, as he speaks again. “That’s correct, no dormitory is required for the transfer.”

Does that mean we’re a step closer?Fuck if I know.

I do know that the dorms are no longer needed at all, Emily included. Part of our agreement with Emmett for this to continue is that Emily moves into the compound with us. She didn’t even bat an eyelash at the demand, willingly agreeing with her gaze flicking to Shift a time or two. It does mean she’s going to take over my room though, and I’m— “You’re all mine tonight, Sweet Cheeks,” Gray mutters against my ear and tightens his arm around my waist as I hum in agreement. I’m being divided between the guys.

Completely and utterly worth it. I wholeheartedly agree that it’s the right thing for Emily to be closer where she can be better protected, but as fun as it is having our little sleepovers, waking up in a pair of thick arms against a hard chest is just superior in every way.

“Thank you for your time, sir,” Shift murmurs and ends the call.

He remains with his back to us for what feels like a lifetime until he finally turns to me. I can’t read his facial expression, which leaves my stomach churning with uncertainty.

“What did he say?” Ryker asks, breaking the silence as Shift shrugs.

“He said he would see your pretty face Monday morning,” he replies, gaze locked on me as a grin spreads across his cheeks.

Emily squeals, Gray squeezes me tight, and sighs of relief echo around the room.

“How do you feel?” Emmett asks, rubbing my thigh as he leans in close.

“I don’t have a clue.”

That’s the truth. I’m bewildered and completely swept up in the entire situation, but as much as it’s for Emily, I’m also excited for myself. I’m going to need to up my reading and writing lessons with her, but it will be worth it.
