“Hey, Cutie Pie.”

My brows knit together as I focus on the road for a moment before glancing back at her. “Cutie Pie?”

She yawns, stretching her arms out and sitting up taller in her seat. “Yup. I have a Viking, Blondie, a newly named Mr. President, and a Cutie Pie.”

“You’ve never called me that before,” I grumble, not sure why my chest is warming at the sentiment.

“I know, I just thought of it now, and I’m sticking with it.”

“No, you’re not,” I grunt, glaring at her while trying to focus on the road.

“Yeah, I am.”

“I’m not a cutie pie.”

“Yeah, you are. Handsome as shit too, but I wanted something cute and fluffy to catch you off guard. So, cutie pie it is.”

I try to find anything to respond with that will work in my defense, but I come up blank. A little giggle sounds from beside me and I know she’s pleased with herself. Tilting my head to her, I note the triumph on her face.

“You really are going to be the death of me, Reaper.”

“I plan on it, but we’ve got this bitch to take care of first. How are we looking?” Her lips drop into a thin line, her eyes darkening as she starts to lose her carefree vibe and focuses on… death.

Clearing my throat, I focus on the road. “We’re about fifteen minutes out.”

“Perfect.”

She reaches for the small bag at her feet and starts to meticulously piece her armor together. Tying her hair into a braid, she curls it at the base of her neck and secures a blonde wig over her head. Bright red lipstick comes out next, followed by bright green contact lenses. I keep my mouth shut as I watch in awe as she transforms before me. Black gloves adorn her fingers, then she pulls a Stanley knife from her bag and cuts a few slits into her tee, offering a glimpse at the pink lace beneath.

Shit. I’m not going to be able to participate in any of this with my dick this hard.

Once she’s done, she turns to me with a smile, barely recognizable and she knows it. “How do I look, Cutie Pie?”

I gulp, glancing down at her exposed breasts as I will an answer to my lips. “Stunning,” I rasp, unable to deny the effect she has on me. Her eyes speak when her mouth doesn’t move. Her gaze is warm despite the lenses, her cheekbones lifting with another teasing smile, and this time, I smile right back.

It almost feels foreign on my face, but I like it.

“Are you ready to recap?” she asks, and I nod. “Okay, Shift confirmed that she has no children and lives alone. Works six days a week at the dive bar in town, where she also dances on occasion. It doesn’t close until six in the morning, which is an hour from now. She’s addicted to prescription drugs, and is in over thirty thousand dollars’ worth of debt.” Scarlett balks. “Fuck, I think we’re doing her a favor here.”

I wonder what this woman has been trying to escape, because that’s exactly what it sounds like she’s trying to do in my opinion. But she’s not as wise as she seemingly thought she once was. I learned quickly that there is no running from this pain; there’s only surviving it, and that only now seems possible since Scarlett appeared in my life.

“So, how do you want this to go?” she asks, making me frown as I process her words for a few moments.

“You’re letting me have a say? I thought you were commandeering this entire thing.” I smirk.

“I mean, I’d like to, but I’m also highly aware that this isn’t about me. I want to march into that bar and slaughter her in front of everyone, but only if you'd like that too. I want whatever will bring this to an end for you, Axel. You fucking deserve some peace; it may not come today, or even tomorrow, but knowing she is gone will make a difference. Is it savage and barbaric for me to say that? Yeah, but that’s who I am, how I was raised, and one of the few things I’m glad I have. This is a dark world, being savage and barbaric is survival, and we’re both sitting here because of it.”

She’s not here to get blood on her hands. Well, she is, but that’s not the point of this little trip. The point is I’m not alone. She’s here however I need, whenever I need, and it sets my fucking soul on fire.

Nodding, I don’t reply for a moment, deciding what I truly want to accomplish here, but first, I should explain some more. “She was the one who paid the most visits,” I explain, clenching the steering wheel like my life depends on it as we start to make our way through the derelict town. Scarlett doesn’t speak, and I don’t turn to glance at her, wanting to focus on getting it off my chest first. “She’s the one who took my… virginity, the one who paid extra when I cried, the one who cried out the name of a small boy when she came, playing with her body just like she taught him how to do.”

Bile burns the back of my throat, embarrassment heating my cheeks.

“She won’t be able to physically touch you ever again after tonight, Axel. Between us, we’ll make sure of it. Then with your last abuser gone, hopefully, closure will find you.”

Unshed tears line her eyes as her jaw clenches, and I nod. “I don’t care how she goes, I just want it done.”

The neon lights flicker above Candy’s Retreat, and my heart races as I pull the truck over further down the road. When I’m sure we’re out of sight, I send a quick message to Shift, confirming we’re not visible on any of the cameras, and wait for his response. Once he has everything technically shut down, all the security cameras gone, then we can move.
