“It’s this building over here this morning, as we have a business class first,” Emily explains, pointing toward the left, and we follow her lead with Shift right at her side. Why does a business class feel like the most overwhelming? This doesn’t feel like it’s going to be fun at all. Let’s just hope I don’t have to fall heavily into reading and writing today. Applying officially to be here as Emily’s protector also requires me to pass these damn classes.

All too soon, she stops, and I know this is where Emmett leaves us. The way his fingers flex on my shoulder in comfort tells me he knows it too.

Fuck.

“Ryker is going to try and get away to be here when you finish, Snowflake,” he says, turning me to face him, and I nod. “You’ve got this. You’re a damn queen at everything you do and you know it. The fact that it’s my sister you’re stepping out of your comfort zone for only makes me love you even more.”

“Is that possible?” I reply with a grin, and he eliminates the space between us to press his lips to mine. It’s over far too soon, but when he leans back, eyes locked on mine, I wet my lips and take a deep breath. “I love you too.”

His eyes practically bug out of his head, but I’m already stepping back and racing up the steps with Emily.

“You’re something else, Scarlett Reeves,” my Viking hollers, making my cheeks heat as we step inside. Emily giggles as she links her arm through mine, guiding me to where we need to go.

“Isn’t Shift coming in with us?” I ask, and Emily shakes her head.

“I convinced him that he should wait outside.”

“As simple as that?”

“As simple as that,” she repeats, her cheeks growing pink as she avoids my gaze. I bite back the smile fighting to spread across my face. I’m so ready for the day she spills the beans on whatever it is the pair of them have going on, but as much as I want the deets, it has to be on her terms.

Following the flow of the other students filling the hallway, we pass window after window, offering a glimpse inside the classrooms, until we reach the end. When we step through the double doors, my stress levels sky rocket, and the sense of overwhelm weighing heavy on me tingles through my veins.

Emily pushes us to the side out of everyone else’s path. “I always sit at the front, so if I move, it may draw attention to you being here. You can join me down there, or get comfortable up here at the back. You’re still in the room with me either way.”

I exhale sharply, relieved this girl knows me so well. “I’ll take the back,” I say, and she nods, squeezing my arm tightly as she nudges me to the closest seat to the door.

“Behave, and don’t stress about notes and stuff. I’ve got this,” she assures before skipping down the steps and taking a seat right in the front row.

I assess the room as I slowly take my seat, dropping my backpack to my feet. The main exit is where we entered to my right, there’s two doors at the bottom, behind the professor's desk, one is labeled as an office, while the other has a fire exit sign. Clear of the getaway points if necessary, I try to drum out the noise coming from the chatter in the room.

My heart rate slows with every passing minute, and when a man steps out of the office, the room quietens. This must be the professor. Emily did tell me his name, but I can’t remember it now.

Movement directly to my left pulls my attention as a guy drops into the seat next to me. Floppy blond hair covers half of his face until he rakes it back with his fingers, tucking it behind his ears. His eyes instantly find mine before he runs them over the length of me.

“You’re new.”

“Am I?”

“Yup, I would know if a hottie like you was running around on campus already,” he states, winking at me, and I fight back the eye roll threatening to take over. Perfect, all I need is a creepy guy in class. Hopefully, ignoring him will make him get bored real quick.

My lips draw into a thin line as I turn my attention to the front.

“Hey, don’t ignore me. What’s your name?” he asks, voice lowering as the professor starts to talk. “I’m Joshua, but you can call me Josh when you’re coming on my dick, if you’d like.”

My eyes snap to him, surprised at his line, but the grin on his lips tells me he was going for the shock factor. Fucker. Looking at him properly now, I realize he’s wearing a blue and white varsity jacket.

Jock.

Of course.

“Has that line ever worked before?”

“Nope, but it got your attention. I can make it up to you if you want?” he offers, unrelenting.

“Thanks, but I have a boyfriend.”Or four, I think, but he doesn’t need to know that.

“That’s—”
