Fuck.

I can’t think of that with Axel’s close proximity. I can’t handle it.

The truck rolls to a stop at the drop-off point, and Shift murmurs his thanks before climbing out. Emily shuffles after him, leaving just the two of us, and I don’t want to leave.

“Don’t have too much fun in there, will you?”

“I would never,” I say with a smirk, still not moving, and he leans toward me to press his lips against my forehead, warming my soul. “I thought we agreed that I was going to be the death of you, not the other way around,” I groan, loving the sound of his chuckle echoing around us.

“I don’t think my dick has ever been as hard as it is now.”

“You can’t say shit like that to me. It’s torture.”

“Tell me about it,” he grunts, making a deliberate show of adjusting himself through his jeans.

Dead. I’m fucking dead. D.E.A.D.

“Come on, lover boy, let our girl go,” Emily hollers, and my eyes narrow even though I don’t turn in her direction. The amusement on Axel’s face quickly reconfirms that the glare is now for him.

Shuffling along the bench, I’m just about to step down from the cab, when Axel speaks. “I’ll be seeing you soon, Reaper.Realsoon.”

My blood heats as I turn to face him, the desire storming in his eyes catches me off guard as I try to find a worthy response. He knows he’s thrown me off balance, but he doesn’t get to win this twisted game unraveling between us.

“I love you, Axel.”

I jump down as quickly as possible, slamming the door shut behind me before I rush to catch up with the others. Axel’s slack jaw, wide eyes, and pink-tinged cheeks will forever be imprinted in my mind.

Chancing a glance over my shoulder, I smile when I find the truck unmoved.Take that, asshat.I doubt myself for a second, worried he’ll think it was a joke under the circumstances. I just have to hope that he knows I would never play with those words unnecessarily, especially not with him.

“Who knew Axel would go soft for someone, huh?” Emily asks, nudging me as Shift leans forward from the other side of her to meet my gaze.

“If it was going to be anyone, it was written in the stars that it would be Scar.”

I bite back my grin at his words. My heart feels full, my soul alive, and my body energized.

Lost in my own mind, I follow after Emily. It’s only when we’re half way up the steps to business class that I realize Shift is still walking with us. Despite the crowds moving around us, I stop to stare at him.

“What are you doing?”

The way he rubs at the back of his neck, the guilty look in his eyes, tells me he knows exactly what I’m talking about. Emily stands between us, eyebrows pinched as she glances from one to the other.

“Do you really think Ryker is going to let me wait outside again?” There’s humor to his tone, but I know for a fact that he’s definitely not joking. That’s exactly something my hot fucking president would do.

“That’s ridiculous,” I grumble, still complaining even though I know my fight is going to be weak.

He shrugs. “Ryker’s the boss.”

I narrow my eyes, ignoring the people having to move around us. “And I’m your friend.”

“Exactly. I’m going to say your safety is paramount here, Scarlett.”

I shake my head at him. “Safety from what? Some guy’s poor attempt at hitting on me. He got the message already.”

Shift shrugs again, making it clear that his actions aren’t going to change, but it doesn’t calm the annoyance inside of me.

“We need to move or we’re going to be late,” Emily interrupts, and I sigh, reluctantly nodding for her to lead the way.

The three of us move in silence as we follow the crowd, before stepping into our classroom. My table from the other day is free, and the spot beside it is empty. One glance around the room and I spot Joshua in the middle row, as far to the left as possible, with his head down and shoulders hunched.
