“What’s up?” Shift asks, strategically standing in front of Emily in defense mode instantly.

“Cop,” I murmur, nodding toward the police car parked up across the street with the deputy and another guy talking by the hood.

“Fuck,” Shift grumbles.My thoughts exactly.

As if sensing our stares, his head lifts in our direction, his eyes narrowing as he assesses me, like he’s trying to remember how he recognizes my face. Instant panic courses through my veins, just as it does every time the police are in the vicinity. I can’t chew the food in my mouth, my body is like ice as I watch his every move.

He can’t remember me from the home invasion, I had a balaclava on, but I ran into him at the diner first, with Ryker, and the conversation definitely wasn’t friendly. The deputy’s eyes narrow as they lock onto Shift’s cut. He’s quickly piecing two and two together before he lifts a cell phone to his ear.

“Why do I have a bad feeling?” Emily asks, pulling my attention away from the fucker, and Shift does the same.

“He saw me at the diner with Ryker a few weeks ago and it was… less than pleasant,” I offer, not wanting to get too deep into it here. His appearance literally confirms that you can’t trust who may or may not be around.

“I’m calling it in, Scar,” Shift states, and I nod.

The deputy’s in the driver seat now, eyes locked on me as the cell still remains at his ear.

Fuck.

My gut twists, a telltale sign that nothing good is coming.

“Molly is gone.”

The room drips in silence, making it even more clear that the mouthiest Ruthless Bitch is no longer with us.

“What do you mean?” Ruthie asks, a tremble to her bottom lip contorting her face as she blinks up at Ryker.

“She’s dead,” Axel grunts, blunter than Ryker’s approach, and the girls gasp.

Standing in front of the booth where the girls gather around, I can’t quite decide who is genuinely shocked and who couldn’t give a shit less. The reality of this life most of the time is that it’s a dog eat dog world because all we’ve ever known is the need to survive. This is no different. As long as it doesn’t have a directional arrow pointing at them as a repercussion, then they’ll get over it.

“Do we know why?” Candy asks, face stoic as she glances over the four of us.

“Because she was helping the enemy,” Emmett states, folding his arms over his chest as a few of the girls’ eyes widen in shock.

“The Brutes?”

“She was a direct line for Kincaid himself,” I grumble, swiping a hand down my face as the memory flashes in my mind. Of all the times that woman has interrupted me, yesterday was the worst. But if there was any reason to put some trophy worthy sex on hold, it’s for a betrayal like that.

“Did anybody know?” Axel asks, casting a deathly stare over each of them, and they shake their heads profusely. “If anyone approaches you about pulling the same bullshit as she did, just remember this moment. We’re only family if you remain loyal.” Once he’s had a nod of confirmation from each of them, he waves his hand. “Good, now fuck off.”

I don’t wait around to see more, heading straight for Church with my brothers following behind me. I’m not expecting anyone to be inside, but when I find Declan and Graham taking up the bottom end of the table, waiting patiently, I keep my surprise muted as I find my seat.

“Graham, Declan,” Ryker murmurs, clicking the door shut behind him. If he’s as surprised as I am, he’s doing well at keeping it hidden. “To what do we owe the pleasure?”

Emmett sits beside me, Axel across the table, and Ryker in the president’s seat. Graham relaxes back in his chair and points to his son. My fists tighten in my lap, knuckles burning with the need to plow them into his fucking face.

“Is it true? Is Molly dead?” Declan asks, swiping his thumb over his lips.

“Yes.” The vein at his temple pulses at the answer as he tries to bite back his anger. “Is there a problem with that?” Ryker asks, face impassive as he stares him down.

There’s nothing harder than acting casual when you know you have a traitor in your grasp. Loyalty seems hard to come by these days.

After what feels like an eternity, Declan shrugs. “Nope, it’s just a shame because she had such a good pussy.”
