Shit. So I had seen him. Fucking creeper.

Sighing, I tuck my hair behind my ear. “You saw exactly what I wanted everyone around me to see and them to feel. There’s nothing more to it than that.”

“Bull. Shit.”

I shrug, which only seems to irritate him further. “You can believe what you want. I know the truth.”

Slowly, he moves around the table between us, dragging his fingers over it as he keeps his gaze fixed on me. “I think I’m starting to believe Molly more and more, little Scarlett.”

“Hmm, that’s never good for anyone.” I shake my head in amusement, holding my ground as he leans back against the table a few steps away from me.

“How would you come to the assumption that your friend is with Declan?” Apparently, he’s not going to let that comment go, and I need to address it if I want to play it off.

“Because I know he’s working for you.” I roll my eyes as an extra measure, downplaying the entire thing as his gaze narrows.

“How?”

“Because I have a functioning brain, that’s how,” I grumble, folding my arms over my chest. I’m definitely channeling my inner Molly right now. She gave me a few good pointers on how to be a dumb bitch.

Kincaid smirks, but it’s still a touch too close to manic and crazed for my liking. “I like it when you get sassy. It’s going to make punishing you so much more fun.”

Yup. Definitely manic and crazed.

Smiling at him like I’m acutely aware of his threat is harder than I care to admit. “Fine, I know he’s working for you because he was obvious as hell when you sent your men to the compound. The last time at least. I watched how he responded to the situation. If anything, you should be proud you have a loyal servant in him. With Ryker and the guys preoccupied with the Devil’s Brutes’ arrival, he sidled up to the table, hand poised on his weapon ready to take anyone and everyone out.” I take a step toward him this time, making it clear I’m docile and not a threat to him. “And before you ask, I notice these things because you don’t grow up with a father like mine and not learn to watch for this kind of stuff. Especially with the Ice Reapers, everyone always had a hidden agenda.”

He steeples his fingers on his lips, glancing down at me like he’s trying to make me feel smaller under his intense gaze. “And you haven’t told them?”

My eyebrows pinch. “Why would I be the one to tell them? I’m not a Ruthless Brother, I’m just a whore.”

“Not to them, you’re not, that’s what Molly said at least. Even Declan agrees that they’re blinded by you.”

Bingo. Way to confirm he’s one of your fucking weasels.

“I think the question that remains is, do I blind you? Or could you see me as an asset too? If that’s what it takes for you to free my friend, I’ll do it.”

He takes a step toward me, then another, and another, until there’s barely any space between us. “You’re a mystery to me, Scarlett,” he says, and I still can’t fully gauge his mindset.

“How about you make the call and release her, give me evidence that you’ve done so, and I won’t be so mysterious by the time we’re done,” I offer, relaxing every tense muscle in my body to make him think he has a calming effect over me. I know he’s able to read body language just as well as I can, his background may not be as twisted as mine, or possibly it is, but I know it’s as merciless. The need to survive is as strong for him as it is for me.

He drops his hands to his sides, smiling slightly as he eliminates the remaining space between us, and I almost think I have him until he engulfs my throat with his giant hand. My eyes widen, but not from the surprise of his move. It’s from the burning need inside of me to get his fucking paws off me, but he’s never going to believe I’m pliant if I fight him right now.

“We’re locked down here, Scarlett. I can take you whether I do what you ask or not,” he bites, rattling me in his hold.

“Are you trying to relive our youth?” I rasp, smirking at him like his hold doesn’t faze me. “I didn’t realize your kink was non-consensual sex. It’s not something I’ve been involved with before.” I’ve heard of it being consensually done, but that’s definitely not what he’s hinting at. The gleam in his eyes tells me he wants it to hurt, on his terms, and against my will.

He’s cruel, heartless, and vile.

Without responding, he spins and pushes me backward so the table edge slams into the base of my spine, and I grunt, but at least he’s dropped his hold on me for a second.

I brace my hands behind me on the table top, eyeing his moves as he slowly stalks toward me. “Molly said you were powerful with a weapon, destructive, and the reason half of my men are dead.”

Shaking my head, I stare directly into his eyes. “Did you fuck her by any chance? Because if you did, then she thinks you’re hers, just like she did with the Ruthless Brothers. Some of the shit she’s said about me has caused me nothing but issues.” Sighing, I wet my lips. “Honestly, Kincaid, I’m just a girl trying to survive by whatever means necessary. This life isn’t normal, not like it is for the rest of the world. In this little sliver of life, it’s all about making it to the next day. I’m not trying to get in anyone’s way, but I’m trying to protect myself too.”

I want to puke at the bullshit spewing from my mouth, especially because I can’t tell whether he’s falling for it or not.

He braces his hands on either side of the table at my waist, leaning in close so the tips of our noses are almost touching. “Why do you keep talking about her like she’s not dead?”

“Wait, what?” I balk, searching his eyes and lifting my hand to my chest like his words hurt me. “She’s not dead.”
