Being a husband.

Clearly, I’d fucked up on the daddy front, but that was fine. Danna had managed without me until now. She could keep going just the way she had.

Except that the girl was a shifter, apparently.

Still, not my problem. I refused for it to be. The last thing that little girl needed was a screw-up like me to look up to. No one else had wanted me, so would she?

“You got a minute?” Rune asked, stepping through the open door that led into my office.

“Yeah,” I said.

The club was quiet. It was after sunrise, and everyone had gone home to sleep off the drug or alcohol high they’d created for themselves. Cleaners were doing their thing, taking care of the club for tonight, and while they did, I went over the books before I slept the day away.

“It’s weird when the bass isn’t going,” Rune said and dropped himself in the chair that faced me. He laced his fingers over his washboard stomach and leaned back, elbows on the armrests.

“Yeah, well, take a nap, and it will be the way you like it when you get up.”

“You should follow your advice,” he said.

I shrugged. “I have a couple of things to take care of before I go to bed. Do as I say, not as I do.”

Rune chuckled. “For the wicked, no rest, right?”

I sighed.

“Speaking of the wicked… we’ve had another outburst.”

“What? Where?” I asked.

“In the casino next door,” Rune said. “Zen was there with two other guys, gambling, and they got a hold of the guy before he shifted and caused bigger shit with the humans. I don’t know why he chose next door for a change, but it saved our asses.”

I scowled. “It’s getting closer to the human world.”

An underground pack had been causing havoc in my city. I was the alpha, and all shifters answered to me, but a faction had broken off and created their own little group, going against the rules. Since they’d broken away from my rule, they were causing trouble, attacking humans, and losing control without me as their alpha to keep them in check. And a series of break-ins had happened that had the police worried, too.

Some of the police officers were shifters, so I was fully aware of what was going on, but so far, I couldn’t find the rogue pack.

“I don’t know how they’re staying hidden,” Rune said. “It doesn’t make any sense.”

“They have to have fae on their side, using spells to keep them safe,” I said with a growl.

Damn fae. They were the bane of my existence.

“Maybe you should reconsider your alliance with them,” Rune said carefully.

I glared at him. “You think this ismyfault?”

“No, that’s not what I’m saying,” Rune said quickly. “I just think that if you get the fae on your side, it might help you. A lot of other alphas are doing it. Colter in New York and Bishop in Minneapolis work with fae, and it’s only helped them so far.”

I shook my head and stood, irritated enough that I couldn’t keep sitting still.

“I’m not working with the fae,” I said sharply.

“I know, I know,” Rune said with a sigh.

“Where’s the shifter who lost control?” I asked. “Do we have him?”

Rune shook his head. “We had him, but then he got out. Zen is pissed about it—he figured no one should have been able to get away from him.”
