I watched him shut down, his mask slipping back into place as his smile faded, and he looked at me instead of Emmie.

“Anyway, you should find whatever you need in there.” He nodded to the boxes. “I want you as comfortable as you can get, given the circumstances.”

Yeah, comfort wasn’t high on my list right now, but I had to admit the idea of fresh clothes was an attractive one. I’d been in the same damn pajamas for three days now, and I was starting to yearn for a bra.

“Thank you,” I said softly, not wanting to sound overly grateful when Wesley was being the way he was. He didn’t have to do all of this, but he was being nice, and that counted for something.

Even though I blamed all of this on him.

“I’ll get to the bottom of this,” he said. “You two just take care of yourselves and be safe, and you’ll be back home in no time.” He looked at Emmie. “You’re going to be just fine, right?”

Emmie only nodded, but Wesley flashed her another rare smile before he turned his back on me and left the house.

Back home in no time.

I wanted to go home, but did that mean he wouldn’t be a part of our lives? I watched him go, and I didn’t know why it hurt so much to see him leave. Wesley and I had never been anything. It had been a one-night stand—albeit an incredible one—and I’d resigned myself to a life without help, without him being in the picture.

Meeting him again hadn’t been in the cards, and seeing him now was almost surreal. I shouldn’t have cared about anything more than our safety and getting back to the life we’d led before.

I’d never envisioned Wesley in any of my future plans.

Despite all of that, my heart ached when he walked away, a hollow feeling opening up in my chest as if something was missing.

I tried to shake off the thoughts, and when the door was shut, all the security guys stationed around the house, I opened the boxes.

“Emmie, come look,” I said.

Emmie peered into the first box I opened. Her eyes sparkled, and she reached into the box.

“Is this for me?” she asked, pulling out a pink dress with a wide skirt and glitter.

“Yeah, it is,” I said.

She found shoes that matched, and in another box, Virginia had added toys. They really were doing what they could to take care of us.

“Can I put this on?!” Emmie asked, excited.

“Bath first,” I said.

Emmie complained, but it didn’t take long to convince her. After her bath, we could put on the clothes and play dress up. I could have a shower and wash my hair, and Virginia—whoever the hell she was—had added underwear for me. I could just cry about that.

For just a second, jealousy racked my body when I thought about Virginia. Who was she to Wesley? Had they been together? Were they serious?

I pushed all the thoughts away. It didn’t matter who she was and what she did, it didn’t matter who she was to Wesley. All that mattered was that we were going to be okay. We had clothes, and we could have a bit of downtime before we went back to our lives back home.

Emmie was safe, I was safe, and everything else was an afterthought.

Especially Wesley.

Although, he seemed to be an afterthought that kept recurring.

DANNA

When I blinked my eyes open, the room was almost completely dark.

I strained my ears. Something had woken me, but I didn’t know what it was. The house was quiet. Emmie hadn’t called me to wake me up—I would have known if she had.
