Shock started to set in now that my adrenaline was fading.

“They found you, and they made it clear they won’t stop, no matter what it takes. Go on, get your things together. We don’t have a lot of time before they know their attempt failed.”

I shook my head. “Where are you taking us now?”

“To my place,” Wesley said. “Until I can figure out what the fuck all this is.” He glanced at Emmie when he swore but looked back at me, unapologetic. “Go. Now.”

I turned back into the house to collect our things.

We had suitcases with clothes now, toys for Emmie, a small sign of the life we’d lived here the past couple of days. We weren’t just whisked away; we were leaving by force.

Wesley disappeared while we packed. I got our things together in record time, getting us both dressed. This whole thing was so much bigger than I thought.

When Wesley finally came back, he wore tracksuit pants and a t-shirt. He must have found it in one of the closets in the house.

“Who lives here?” I asked.

“The pack, when they need space,” Wesley said. “It happens now and then that someone needs to get away, needs a place to stay, needs help in some way.”

Did that include me and Emmie now? We weren’t a part of his pack, I guess. At least, I wasn’t. I didn’t know what Emmie was. I was her mother, but these days, I didn’t know what her life would be like and what role I could play to look after her at all.

“This house isn’t so safe,” I said. “I don’t know if someone would want to stay here now.”

“I’ll take care of the mess,” Wesley said curtly. “And the security. We should go.”

I nodded.

By the time we reached the front door, Rune and Zen were there with a truck to pick us up. Rune lifted his hand in a wave.

Zen whistled through his teeth when he glanced around the house toward the back.

“You really did a number on them, huh?” he said. “If I didn’t know any better, I would have said—”

“Shut the fuck up,” Wesley snapped, cutting Zen off. “Did you do what I asked?”

“Yeah,” Zen said, irritated. “Of course.”

“Good,” Wesley said. “Get the crew in. I want this mess cleaned up by morning.”

The twins nodded, and Wesley got into the truck, ready to drive us back himself. When we were tucked into the seats, seat-belted in and ready to go, Wesley put the truck in gear and backed out of the driveway.

“You’re leaving them here?” I asked, looking at the twins as they disappeared around the house. “You’re not letting them take us back.”

“I’m not letting you out of my sight again,” Wesley growled. “They know what they’re doing.”

“How did you know to come?” I asked when he drove us through the city, the neon lights flashing all around us.

“I pressed the button,” Emmie said.

“You did the right thing,” Wesley said with a smile. “But I would have come, anyway.”

“How?” Emmie asked.

“I justknew.”

Emmie nodded as if that was enough of an answer.

I frowned. It didn’t make any sense, but right now, I wasn’t going to question it. If Wesley hadn’t come, God knows what would have happened to us. He’d saved us a second time now.
