“I’ll make sure nothing happens to her,” Wesley said.

“Why?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him. “You didn’t care before. I distinctly remember you saying she wasn’t your problem.”

Wesley pursed his lips. “That’s not what I said.”

I wanted to say more, but I swallowed my words. I wasn’t going to argue with him. He hadn’t wanted us here. He’d sent us back, and although we were here now, I was under no illusion that he cared.

“You know she’s yours,” I said. It was a statement, not a question.

The way he treated Emmie made it clear he cared more than if it was just a random, unrelated child who walked into his life. He was so good to her. The contrast between how cold he was toward me and how warm he was toward her was staggering.

“I know.”

“You didn’t seem surprised when we arrived here. How long have you known?”

“Long enough.”

“What kind of an answer is that?” I was getting angry with him. “Why didn’t you do anything if you knew?”

“What was I supposed to do?”

I stared at him, shocked at his reply.

“I could have used some help, you know.”

“I’m giving it to you now.”

I shook my head and laughed bitterly.

“This kind of help isn’t exactly what I had in mind.”

“It’s all I can offer,” Wesley said tightly. “I’m not a father, and I never will be.”

“I’ve got news for you—”

“I’m not a father,” Wesley said, his voice hard.

“What is your problem?” I demanded. “I know this wasn’t exactly planned, but do you think it was easy for me to just give up my life and be a mom? It’s not like I’m in a different position than you are just because you have a club and a shit ton of money.”

I was getting more and more upset, and a part of me didn’t even know exactly why. I’d thought I’d made my peace with the fact that I couldn’t find Wesley, and I had to raise my daughter alone without help, but now that he was right here in front of me, a reality rather than just the fantasy I’d tried to convince myself he was, everything was different.

Not that the world we were stuck in now with magic and shifters was anythingotherthan a fantasy, but that was beside the point.

I shook my head and downed the coffee that was left in my cup, lukewarm now. I got up.

“I’m going to my room.”

“Danna,” Wesley said.

“I don’t really have the energy for this,” I sighed. “Why don’t we just stick to what we’re here to do? I’ll be Emmie’s mother, and you do the thing where you stop the bad guys from getting to us. I’d like to go back home at some point.”

I turned toward the room.

“Don’t turn your back on me,” Wesley growled.

That just pissed me off. Who did he think he was?

I spun around. “You don’t get to tell me what to do. You might be the alpha around here, but you’re not Emmie’s alpha, like you said, and since I’m human, you’re notmyalpha in any way. And maybe I will just find someone else who will treat Emmie as his own—someone who cares about both of us in a way that we deserve to be treated.”
