Myeyes bulge at her question andIshake my head. “There’sno wayI’llbe able to find someone to be my date in enough time, andI’dhate to do that.”Itmight not seem like such a bad idea, butI’dhate to lead someone on into thinking they have a chance with me.

Atthe momentWinnieopens her mouth,Bishoppushes through the door and glances towardWinniewith a small nod of his head. “Cindyis having some issues with the scheduling.Thinkyou could help her out?”Hebarely turns his stare to my best friend as he waits for me to answer.

“Ofcourse, be out there in a minute.”ThenIstand from my desk at the same momentBishopshuts my office door.Ishake my head atWinnieand give her a small smile. “Let’sface it,Pooh, he will never want me.”

Shewraps a hand around my elbow whenIget to the door and nudges her head at it. “Whatabout him?”

Icock my head to the side. “Who?”

“Dr.Alder, you idiot.”

“Uh, what about him?”Beforeshe even answersIalready know what she’s going to say.Andalthough that doesn’t seem like such a terrible idea, the thought of using him to get toCamdendoesn’t sit right with me.

Ishake my head dramatically and swing my door open, then walk away from her without another word.

Whenwe reach the entrance door,Winnieleans close to me as her gaze darts over my shoulder and says, “Justthink about it.”

Itell myself that there’s nothing to think about asIwatch her walk from the office with her head held high, and even asIcontinue throughout the work day.

Butthe idea ofCamdentaking notice of me ifIhave a date forWinnie’swedding has me smiling at the thought of it.What’sthe worst that could happen?

Chapter2

Bishop

It’san hour past closing time whenIwalk through the halls and notice the small strip of light underGeorgia’sdoor.Ishake my head, inching my way toward it and knocking lightly until she orders me to come in.

WhenIpush it open, she’s sitting at her desk engrossed in whatever paperwork has been assigned to her, and her hair falls in waves in front of her face.

Shedoesn’t even look up at me asIpush through the door and shut it softly behind me.Itake a seat on a chair in front of her desk, staring at her intently, watching as she chews on the inside of her cheek in concentration. There’sno denying the sheer beauty of this woman, even ifIam ten years older than her.

Georgiataps the pen she’s holding frantically along the surface of her desk, readjusting her position on her chair, then glances up at me briefly. “Everythingokay,Dr.Alder?”

“It’spast work hours,Bishopis fine.”Shealways feels the need to call meDr.Alderthroughout the day, butImanaged to convince her to call meBishopoutside of the office.

Herhoney gaze falls onto me and she gives me a smile, one thatIdaydream about daily butI’llnever admit that to her. “You’reright, sorry.WhatcanIdo for you,Bishop?”

Ishake my head. “Nothing, just wanted to see why you were still here.Youshould’ve left an hour ago when everyone else did.”SinceI’mthe chiropractor, there’s always a mess of appointments thatIneed to look through at the end of the day. “Haveyou eaten?”Thisisn’t the first time we’ve gone out to eat with each other, but it’s always been in a friendly manner and nothing more.

Atmy question,Georgia’sstomach rumbles andIchuckle at the sound of it echoing through the room. “I’lltake that as a yes.Comeon, you can finish this first thing in the morning.”

Sheglares at me. “Ineed to get this done.”

“Doesit need to be handed in as soon as you walk through the door?”

Shehuffs and rolls her eyes. “No.”

Igive her a smirk and hold my hand out to her. “Then, it’s settled, let’s go get something to eat.”There’sa bistro down the road that we frequent when either of us has worked too hard for the day and completely skip out on lunch.Weusually take turns buying each other’s food, and if my memory is correct, it’s my turn to buy this time.

Shereluctantly places her hand in mine, then grabs her purse from the floor under her desk.Mygaze catches on to the way her skirt hugs her ass as she bends down, andIshake the thought away as soon as she turns to face me.Thelast thing she needs is for me to be having these thoughts about her. She’smade herself perfectly clear since she started working for me — this will always be a strictly platonic relationship.Nothingmore.

Ilet her lead the way out of the office.Knowingher, she’d try to sneak her way back into it with me in front of her, andI’mnot having any of that.Aswe walk along the deserted sidewalk,Irecall seeingWinnieinGeorgia’soffice this morning. “Waseverything okay withWinnietoday?”

Georgiatrips over her own feet andIshoot a hand out to catch her, the touch sending electricity through my arm.Onceshe’s steady,Iflinch away from her and stuff my hands into my front pockets.

It’ssilent for a moment as she thinks about her answer, then she clears her throat. “Yes, everything was fine.”

Inod, not wanting to poke into her private life any further.Thereare some bosses that would berate their employees for bringing their personal lives into their work, but that’s not me.Don’tget me wrong, if you aren’t doing the work that’s required of you,I’llhave an issue.Butif you manage to still get your work done,I’mokay with it.
