Tonight’s menu consists of chicken parmesan and spaghetti, with a side of Grant and Noah arguing.

Again.

“You have an iPad. Why do you need a phone?”

“I can’t fit an iPad in my purse, Dad.”

“Get a bigger purse.”

Noah blows a stream of air through her nostrils. “But everyone has a phone.”

“They’re not my daughter. You are.”

“Don’t you want to know where I am? You’d be able to keep tabs on me with a phone.”

“I always know where you are.” Grant hikes a shoulder. “And your friends’ parents have cell phones, so I can contact them.”

“I just don’t see what the big deal is.” Noah turns her attention to me. “Tell him, Lenny. I’m old enough for a phone, don’t you think?”

I hold up my hands on either side of my head. “I’m not getting in the middle of this one.”

Grant tilts his head. “Do you think I’m being unreasonable?”

I chew my bottom lip. “No…”

“But?”

“But if you gave her a phone, then you could have her location god forbid something happens. There won’t always be a parent there to supervise her.” I shrug. “If I had a kid, I’d want her to have a phone.”

He stares down at his plate while he chews.

“Why don’t you have any kids?” Noah asks.

I set myself up for that one, didn’t I?

“I wanted to, but that wasn’t in the cards for me.”

“Do you have a husband? Or a boyfriend?”

Grant watches me as his daughter asks what’s on her mind. “That’s enough questions, Noah.”

She drops her chin. “I’m just asking.”

I force a smile as I lean both elbows onto the table. “You can ask me anything you want. It’s okay.” I force a smile. “I did have a husband, but now he’s my ex-husband. And I don’t have a boyfriend.”

“Why did you guys get divorced?”

“Well, uh, he cheated on me. And now they’re engaged and she’s having his baby.”

Grant chokes on his water.

Noah scrunches her nose. “Eww. What an asshole.”

“Language,” comes from both me and Grant.

She hikes a shoulder. “Sorry, but it’s true.”

Grant nods. “The guy does sound like an asshole.”
