Holy shit. Grant Harper is smiling.

I sober as my eyes fixate on his face. Slight dimples bracket his mouth and the corners of his eyes crinkle as his wide smile pushes up his cheeks. His eyes shine like black obsidian stones. And his deep laughter reverberates in my chest, spreading goose bumps along my skin.

Forget his ass. Forget all of his muscles. His smile—that’s the most mesmerizing sight.

“You know, I’ve noticed you across the street for years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile.”

He clears his throat and the smile fades. “You’ve noticed me?”

Heat crawls into my chest. “Kind of hard not to, if I’m being honest.”

He keeps his eyes locked with mine, and I’d give just about anything to hear what he’s thinking.

But he doesn’t let me in on whatever it is.

I want to make him smile again. “What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie?”

His eyebrows press together. “What?”

“Come on, guess. What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie.”

His eyes roam my face while he thinks. “I don’t know.”

“So-fish-ticated.”

One corner of his mouth twitches.

I grin. “Okay, how about: If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?”

He arches a brow.

“Pilgrims.”

He rolls his lips.

“Nothing? Really?” I rub my palms together. “Fine. Okay, here’s my favorite: Why did Snoop Dogg grab his umbrella?”

Grant tilts his head.

“You do know who Snoop Dogg is, right?”

He rolls his eyes. “Yes, I know who he is. Now tell me why he grabbed his umbrella.”

I waggle my eyebrows. “Fo’ drizzle.”

Grant laughs into his hand and covers it up with his hand.

“Yes!” I pump my fists into the air. “I did it!”

He shakes his head as he balls up his napkin and drops it onto his plate. “Those are pretty painful jokes.”

“Painfully hilarious.” I nudge his elbow. “Come on, you’re a dad. You need to brush up on your dad jokes.”

“I’ll get right on that.”

I help Grant clear off the table, and thank him for dinner.

Tonight, he walks me out onto the porch.
