Tonight is the first weeknight we haven’t had dinner together in a while, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not sad about missing it.

“That text right there?” She gestures to my phone. “That’s not about the dog missing you. And you know it. You should talk to him, Len. Tell Grant how you feel, and see if he feels the same.”

“I don’t even know how I feel.”

“Yes, you do. I can see it in your eyes when you talk about him. You’re starting to have feelings for him.”

“I’m attracted to him, for sure. He’s a good dad. He works hard.”

“Your heart speeds up when you’re with him, and your face lights up when he texts you.” She arches a brow. “Try to deny it.”

I groan and prop up my head with my hand as I lean my elbow onto the table. “I know. You’re right.”

I like Grant.

I shoot him a text back, not wanting to leave him hanging.

Me:Give him a kiss for me and tell him he’s a good boy.

Grant: Someone else misses you too.

I smiledown at the picture of Noah sticking out her bottom lip.

Me:Give her a kiss for me too.

Me: And one for yourself while you’re at it.

Grant: You’d kiss a mean old ogre?

Me: I’d do a lot of things to that mean old ogre.

It’s a bold text, but I’m not ashamed to put myself out there.

The ball is in his court now. I slip my phone back into my purse, squeezing my thighs together to relieve the ache between them.

Simone sits back against her chair and purses her lips.

“I know, I know. I’ve got it bad.”

“Yeah, you do. And he’s obviously into you too. You don’t text like that with someone you’re strictly platonic with.”

“I guess, but he hasn’t said anything.” I shrug. “He isn’t very…expressive with his feelings.”

Simone stirs the iced tea with her straw. “You should talk to him. Ask him where his head is at and see how he feels.”

My stomach twists at the thought. “Noah said he hasn’t dated anyone in a long time, and he said himself that he needs to focus on his daughter.”

“Pfft.” Simone waves a hand. “She’ll be fine. I bet she’d be ecstatic if you dated Grant.”

I can’t help the smile that spreads across my face. “She’s great.”

“I have to run to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”

“Again?” I glance at her half-empty cup. “Slow down on the liquids. I think you’re plenty hydrated.”

She laughs. “You can never be too hydrated.”

While Simone is in the bathroom, I send Grant an old picture of myself from prom.
