Should I talk to Grant?

Am I being too hard on him?

In the middle of an episode ofThe Bachelor, Grant’s name lights up on my phone as if my thoughts summoned him.

“Oh, shit.” Simone glances at the phone buzzing in my hand like a detonated bomb. “Answer it.”

Nerves twist my stomach as I slide my thumb across the screen. “Hello?”

“Elena, is Noah with you?”

Fear spikes in my veins at the sound of his alarmed tone. “No. I’m at Simone’s house. What’s wrong?”

Simone leans closer to hear.

“Fuck.” Something crashes before Grant speaks again. “She’s missing.”

I shoot up from the couch and shove my feet into my sneakers. “What do you mean, she’s missing?”

“Hannah’s mom picked her up and took the girls to dinner. It was getting late, so I texted her to see what time she’d be bringing Noah home. She said Noah told her that she wasn’t feeling well and that she asked to use her phone to call me to pick her up.”

My eyebrows press together. “Why would she say that?”

“I don’t fucking know, but no one has any clue where she is, and now I don’t know what to do.”

“It’s okay. We’re going to find her.” I cover the speaker and mouth the wordsI’m sorryto Simone.

She waves me out the door. “Keep me updated.”

I give her a quick hug, and then I bolt out the door. “Where did they go to dinner?”

“Houlihan’s.”

I glance at the time on my screen as I swing myself into my car. “I can be there in twenty minutes. Stay at the house in case she shows up.”

“I can’t just sit here waiting for her.”

“Someone needs to be there when she walks through that door.”

He’s quiet for a moment. “And what if she doesn’t?”

“We’ll find her, Grant.” I peel out of the driveway. “Call Hannah’s mother and ask to speak to her daughter. Maybe her friends know what happened.”

“Why would she lie like that?”

“I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out. Something had to have upset her to make her want to leave dinner with her friends.”

“If this has something to do with that Reese girl, I swear—”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions. Let me focus on driving, and I’ll let you know when I get there.”

“Elena…”

My heart wrenches in my chest. “It’s going to be okay, Grant. There will be an explanation for this, and Noah will be safe. Trust me.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she has to be.”
