“What?” I’m at the stadium. We just had the team meeting, and Ty and I are about to have a weight lifting contest with Jay keeping score.

Ashton is wandering around some place after the best weekend of his life, according to him, only having to say goodbye to Maddison when she went back to Miami this morning. He didn’t seem happy about that part.

“She went to the hospital late last night as she wasn’t feeling good.”

“What the hell? Why didn’t she call me?” Wait… why is he calling me? “Is she okay?” I hold my breath and feel like I’m going to have a heart attack. I can’t believe she’s in the hospital while I was rolling around with Emmerson.

“She’s physically okay, yes. It was just a precaution. But they have some news.”

I swallow hard. “Dad, what’s going on, and how did you know about this?”

“She called me first. She wanted me to be the one to call you, not someone you don’t know from the hospital. She was so upset, but time didn’t permit last night as they admitted her straight away.”

Fuck. I feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest.

“What did they say?”

“You really need to be here,” he says. “We’re not doing this over the phone.”

“Where are you, Seattle Gen?”

“No, we’re heading home now. They ran some tests this morning.”

“On my way.” We hang up, and I stand there staring into space.

“You all right, man?” Ty asks, looking concerned.

“You look like you saw a ghost,” Jay says.

“It’s my Mom,” I stammer. “She’s been in the hospital.”

They both stare at me. “Fuck,” Jay says.

“You better go, bro. I’ll let Coach know.”

“Thanks.” I nod. “I’ll try to get back when I can.”

I jump into my car and drive at about a million miles per hour to get there, so much is running through my brain. Why didn’t dad tell me what was going on over the phone?

It must be fucking bad.

Would they know right away? I don’t know how these things work. I thought she said it would be a few days to get the tests back.

When I get home, I see dad’s car outside.

It’s so strange to see him here, and be here for mom after all these years.

I thought they hated each other. Yet here he is.

When I get to the front door, dad appears.

“Is she okay?”

He fully embraces me quickly and steps back to look at me. “She’s okay, come on in.”

He holds out the door for me as I stride into the lounge room where mom is sitting with a cup in her hands.

When she sees me, she puts it down and gets up, walking toward me.
