It’s so close to the end, I can practically hear the siren in my mind’s eye.

Once it rings out, I breathe a sigh of relief knowing we’re well on the way.

We win with three games to their one.

This means the next game is at home in two days’ time, and if we jag the next one, we seal up the cup. Games six and seven won’t even be necessary, and I like the sounds of that more and more.

We’re pretty elated, but not counting our chickens just yet.

As soon as I get out of the stadium, I need to talk to Emmerson.

These past few days have felt like a freaking lifetime.

I call her before we get on the team bus, when we’re making our way back to the hotel after the game.

“You dodging me?” I ask, as soon as she picks up.

I feel instantly relaxed now I’m hearing her voice.

“I wouldn’t do that.”

“You’ve been pretty quiet,” I observe.

“So have you.”

“How are things? Your Dad doing okay?”

“He’s doing great,” she says. “You had him on the edge of his seat again.”

I chuckle. “That’s good to hear.”

“You’re flying back for the next game?”

“Yeah. First flight out in the morning… you gonna come to the game? If we win this one, that’s it for the cup, Emmerson.”

“Meaning we can talk about us then?”

“I’m sorry for being like that.” The few days I’ve been away and not hearing from her has been doing me in.

It would be so much better if she were there.

“I get you have to concentrate on the game, but you shut me down pretty quick.”

“I thought it was the best way,” I admit. “Shows how little I know.”

She’s silent on the other end.

“Em, I’m sorry. Will you come watch me? The game is in two days…”

“I should be able to.”

But she doesn’t sound sure.

“Look, let’s have these couple more days apart, so you can think about it. If you’re there on game night, then I’ll know. How does that sound?”

“What do you want to happen with us?” she asks. “Are you going to think about that? You didn’t seem too sure the other day, and it’s fine if you don’t-”

“I do know,” I say suddenly, wishing we were face to face so I could see her. “I was being an idiot, trying to protect myself.”
