And it does feel like old times when I lie down in my childhood bed, staring up at the ceiling. I should be tired; it’s been a long day and an equally long night, but I feel wide awake and a million miles away from sleep.

I can’t stop thinking about Taylor, and the game the girls have successfully talked me into attending by the end of the night.

The truth is, a stupid, senseless, and even selfish part of me wants to know if there’s still a spark when I look at Taylor. I want to know if there’s something there.

It’s dangerous grounds to be stepping on, but when you’ve been in a passionless relationship for a few years longer than you probably should have, you can’t help but wonder what was.

Nostalgia is creeping its way in from every angle being home. Everywhere I go, everywhere I look, I see my childhood, and all the memories from as far back as I can remember, involve Taylor.

It’s like he’s everywhere.

I can’t even drive into my parents’ freaking driveway without thinking of him and the first day I met him.

I have nerves in my stomach thinking about his mom and the fact she knows I’m here and wants to say hi. I don’t even know what I would say to her. So much time has passed.

I somehow slip into a dreamless sleep and wake up feeling like I probably need two more hours of shuteye. But I smell the coffee and breakfast wafting, and it’s enough to get me rolling out of bed into my fluffy robe.

After using the bathroom, I venture down into the kitchen and walk in to see my mom and Maddie both busy in the kitchen and chatting away while the radio plays some classic in the background. I almost need to rub my eyes. Maddison isn’t exactly an early riser, especially on vacation.

She drank way more than me too, so I have no idea why she’s bopping around the kitchen like she has no cares in the world, or even the tiniest glitch of a headache.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” Mom hollers over her shoulder to me, as she monitors whatever she is cooking at the stove.

Smells like pancakes. Yum.

“Morning,” I mutter, walking over to the coffee pot and pouring myself a large mug.

“What are you doing looking so chirpy?” I accuse my best friend playfully.

She’s even dressed already, wearing yoga pants and an oversized light-weight jersey. Her wild hair is pulled up into a bun on top of her head. “Oh, it’s a beautiful morning.” She shrugs. “I’m really getting into vacation mode, Em. Tessa said I can have the rest of the week off. Isn’t that fantastic! So I’ve got nothing to worry about work wise for what seems like an eternity.”

Hmm, that will be the day.

But yes, a week off does seem like an eternity when we are all working so hard these days.

It shouldn’t be a luxury to spend some time away from the grind, but somehow it seems to be that way more often than not.

“That’s great!” I say, as I blow into my coffee before taking a sip. I sit down at one of the breakfast stools overlooking the kitchen.

“We should go shopping,” she declares. One of her favorite pastimes. “Let’s get something new to wear for the game tomorrow night.”

In the light of day, I don’t know what I was thinking, or why I would torture myself this way. But I’ve already declared all is well, that my feelings for Taylor are in check, and I can definitely handle it.

“Sounds good.” I shrug. “Do you want to come, Mom?”

Mom shakes her head. “No, honey, I have a few things I have to get done today, but you girls have fun and buy yourselves something nice.”

I’m not a huge fan of shopping, but we haven’t hit the mall in ages, so I was kind of looking forward to maybe buying a new pair of jeans and I was in desperate need of some new underwear.

“Hey, what do you think of Cindy’s little revelation about that Ty guy?” Maddie asks me when we’re in a lingerie shop which sells everything from your basic cotton high waisted, to sexy kitten barely-there thongs, and everything in between.

“God, I know! It all seems quite insta-lovey, but she seems really taken with him. He looks like a Greek God,” I inform her. “I can see where the attraction lies.”

“Yeah, well, from what I saw I tend to agree.”

I laugh. “But she is the coach’s daughter, not cool.”

“Do you think she’ll be able to go on a date with him without the press finding out?” Maddie asks, genuinely concerned.
