“Thanks, Ash. Team effort, but I appreciate it.”

We’ve both worked freaking hard to try and make it into the playoffs. It’s not all my doing, not by a long shot.

“You know, I’ve got a feeling about this season. I think it’s going to play out how we want it.”

I smile to myself. If only it were that simple.

CHAPTER9

Taylor

I feel a little talked out by the time I get around to calling my mom back from yesterday. And I feel like a prick even thinking that, but after Ashton and a dozen other calls all morning, I am almost all out. I have to let her know I’m okay, though, I don’t want mom worrying. I know she was at the game last night, but I didn’t get to talk to her.

“Taylor, honey, how are you?”

“I’m good, Mom. Been stuck on the phone all morning.”

“That’s okay, I just wanted to say how great the game was last night. You definitely had a spark in your step.”

“Thanks, Mom.” I wonder if she stuck around to see me talking to Emmerson.

“I saw your Father in the stands.” They don’t talk to each other, of course; they just pretend the other isn’t there most of the time.

I sigh in response.

“Would it kill you to be civil with him for once?” She’s been talking like this for a little while and I don’t know why the sudden change.

“I am civil,” I retort. The wedge between us came very early on in life when mom kicked him out. As far as I knew, he had an indiscretion, but I didn’t know that until years later.

It isn’t as though they were a loving couple, from what I can remember. My mom taught figure skating while I was growing up and was a pretty hard task master. She assists now only at a local level and doesn’t travel anymore for her job.

I remember them arguing when I was very young about the fact she gave everything to her job and nothing to my father. It’s strange that memory always pops up in my head. My mom has always been quite a hard woman at times, she’s never exactly been warm and fuzzy… but she’s always wanted the best for me. I know she’d do anything for me to make sure I succeeded.

“I hear Emmerson is in town.”

I swallow upon hearing that. I wondered how long it would take for her to mention that part. It’s not like she wouldn’t know about it since they all still live next door to each other. I hadn’t even gotten around to asking Emmerson if she’d seen my mom yet. I figured she probably would have mentioned it.

“Yes, she is, I saw her last night.”

“Sweetheart.” Mom sounds surprised and almost concerned.

“She came to the game with Cindy and the girls,” I say. Obviously she left straight away and didn’t see me talking to her.

“Did you have the chance to talk to her?”

“In brief,” I say, sipping the last of my lukewarm coffee. Gross.

That’s all I want to elaborate on, but mom keeps pressing.

“Are you going to see her while she’s in town?”

“I don’t know, Mom.” I do probably know the answer to that, but I don’t want to divulge that to anyone but Ashton at the moment. I’m still wrapping my head around it.

“It would be nice to catch up, wouldn’t it?”

I sigh. “Maybe. I think she’ll be pretty busy while she’s in town with her friends. But we’ll see.” I’m growing more and more sure that we won’t just see, because I’m a stupid fuck who is a glutton for punishment.

But a part of me does want to have it out with her.
