“Well, your divorce, for one.”

“We weren’t married,” I remind her.

She shakes that off. “Well, whatever… celebrate your singleness then. I mean, nothing against Doug or anything; he’s not a bad guy, but imagine how much worse it would be spending a lifetime with the wrong person.”

I can’t help a small laugh, despite the current state of affairs. Maddie always has a way of trying to see the positive in any kind of situation.

“That in itself is something to celebrate, Em.”

“Maybe a night out with the girls would do me good.”

“Leave the details up to me… we’ll go have a nice dinner, maybe a club with some drinks after or a fancy wine bar… hey… what about a hockey game?”

I freeze upon hearing that last part. “Hockey?” I say in a tone which implies she may actually be out of her mind.

“Well, you’ll be in the home of the Hawks territory… seriously, I know you think abouthim.”

Of course I think about him. He’s been on my mind incessantly lately.

I don’t know why that is. Maybe he never really left my thoughts.

I sigh heavily. That’s a whole subject within itself. It isn’t like I haven’t spoken about Taylor over the years, or admitted to my best friend how the spark has never really extinguished. But there’s no way I can go to a game.

To see him again… my heart hammers in my chest just at the thought of it.

“I don’t know how you would think that’s a good idea, Mads.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea… it’s a great idea!”

“Well, the answer is no. Thanks all the same.”

“Cindy can get us great seats… she’s sweet on one of the guys… but I forget his damned name.” She’s completely hopeless with hockey and knows none of the players except for Taylor. “Don’t you want to know?” she continues, interrupting my thoughts.

We’ve been fighting on and off about this for years. Her philosophy is I need to confront it and see him again, so I would know if my feelings for him have changed over the years or not.

Not that any good could come of it even if I did.

Taylor James is in a whole world of his own now. He’s the best in the business and a multi-millionaire with everything at his disposal.

I sigh deeply at her question. The mere notion terrifies me. “I don’t know, Mads. Does that sound pathetic?”

“Not really, I get it’s a touchy subject for you. But how would he even see you in the stands?”

That’s actually a good point. “Look, I’ll think about it. But I don’t know what good can come of it.”

“Well, it’s up to you. I’ll double check with Tess that I can clear my schedule. I think it should be fine… then I have to pack.”

“Okay, well, shoot me a text later. Let me know if you’re good to go.”

“Will do.”

“I’ll come over with a bottle of wine after work, how does that sound?”

It actually sounds like music to my ears because I’ve packed everything in the kitchen… and the fridge is completely empty. “Sounds like a plan,” I tell her.

I’m glad to have some company tonight, maybe then the house won’t feel so empty.
