I think it’s only been a few months since they separated. I guess that’s why she’s probably in town getting away.

“Shut the fuck up. Em is off limits!” I spit.

“Ooh, sounds like a touchy subject.” Jay grins his head off, getting the rise out of me he wanted, obviously.

“The ex is always off limits,” Tyler points out tactfully.

“And it'sEmnow, huh?” Jay presses on, observant as ever.

I give him a look. “That is her name, wiseass.”

He laughs and holds his hands up in surrender. “Hey, I won’t go there if you’rethatsensitive about it.”

He knows we had a thing, an epic thing, so he’s messing with me big time.

Asshole.

I sigh and decide that perhaps if I ignore him, he will go away.

One can only hope.

“What are you guys bitching about?” Our massive star goalie Ulrich comes around the corner, resembling more of a grizzly bear than an actual human.

“Nothing.” I sigh. The last thing I need is anyone else getting involved.

“It’s fine,” Jay continues. “I’ll go for one of her friends… they were all cute.”

I glance at Tyler. Jay knows as well as I do about the Cindy saga.

“Forget about Cindy.” Tyler points a finger in his face. “Don’t fucking think about it.”

I laugh to myself, glad the heat has been taken off me.

Ulrich gives us a strange look.

“He’s being an ass,” I inform him. I think the last thing Tyler needs is Jay shouting around about Cindy.

“You two are both highly strung.” Jay sighs. “You know it’s a sign of sexual frustration, and it’s not healthy.”

I stand and give him a shove with my shoulder. “Takes one to know one, JJ.”

“A sexually frustrated guy… me?” He laughs. “I don’t think so.”

It’s probably true. There’s no way I’m admitting to the fact I’ve been off the circuit, so to speak, for a few months. Maybe I’m just so focused on the cup and I can’t see the wood for the trees. That must be what it is.

CHAPTER13

Emmerson

I could never have anticipated what transpired this morning. All day I’ve just been going over everything in my head.

“Who the hell made you the family shrink of the James family?” Maddie asks me when I’m getting ready for dinner. I’m sitting at my old dressing table in my bedroom while she plays on her phone, surfing the net.

“Beats me.” I shrug. “But what a morning I had.”

I sort of gave Maddie a brief overview of what happened with Gillian’s confession about our breakup and Taylor walking in on us talking. I didn’t go into the cancer thing, though. I only mentioned that she hadn’t been well and was doing some tests.

“How do you feel about it all? It must’ve been kind of weird.”
