“Well, tell me what it is so I know if it’s a big deal or not.”

I look down at my plate. I don’t really want to go there, not right now. Maybe not ever. I shake my head. “If she didn’t mention it, then it doesn’t matter.”

I don’t look up, but I know he’s watching me again.

“Emmerson, out with it, please?”

I look up at him and see that pained look in his eyes. His mom was right, he’s not one hundred percent happy at all.

“Look.” I sigh. “We had words back then, a few nights before… before I left for Florida.”

“Words? Like what?”

I shake my head. “Did she really never tell you any of this?”

“Would I be asking you if I knew?”

I take a much-needed deep breath and curl my lip under while best deciding how to put this… there is no best way, I realize. I just have to say it as mildly as possible.

I know he’s waiting for an answer.

“Fine. She more or less asked me to break up with you.”

I reach for my last oyster, like that’s going to save me. But I feel his stare, and it’s deeper and much more profound than before, if that’s even possible.

I see the shock and the fire in his eyes as I risk a glance up to him.

I realize then he truly doesn’t know his mom was a pivotal piece in our split, and now I’ve just outed her.

CHAPTER14

Taylor

I stare at Emmerson, soaking in her words, wishing I had a stiff drink I could knock back… and I’m now seriously considering one.

“I’ve no idea what you’re talking about,” I say to her eventually.

She looks decidedly uncomfortable. She clearly thought I knew this information.

How in the hell would I know?

“That night we went to my parents’ and you walked your Mom over to her house afterwards… I was there at the front door about to go in. I heard you talking.”

I try to register what the hell she’s talking about now, thinking back to that time.

I knew there was something wrong with her that night.

“I don’t remember exactly what was said,” I admit. “But I know my Mom’s stance was pretty clear. She was urging me to talk to you. That’s all she said to me.”

I look down at my plate, just as the waiter comes and clears them away.

“But you agreed with her. She said something about it not being selfish to think about yourself, and how could we keep it going… then you said, ‘you’re right.’”

I glare at her, feeling smoke suddenly coming out of my ears. I try to not let it blind me from hearing what she’s saying. “What?”

“That’s what you said.” She shrugs.

“But that’s not all I said. I went on to say that I loved you, Emmerson, that I wouldn’t do that to you. And when she tried that tact you mentioned, I said you’re right, it’s not selfish to think about my career… but that wasn’t all said after it.”
