The elevator pings and we step inside. As soon as we do, it all comes crashing down.

Everything. The breakup with Doug. Selling our beautiful house. Coming home. Seeing Taylor again. Watching him at the game. The talk with his mom.

Dinner tonight. Rehashing our breakup. And now my dad is in hospital after the onset of a heart attack.

It’s been a big few days, and the waterworks just turn on for themselves.

“Oh, Em.” Maddie pulls me into a hug, and I sob in her arms. I can’t help myself.

“I’m so worried about my Dad,” I blubber.

“He’s going to be okay, he’s in the best hands. You saw him… he was sitting up laughing and trying to make jokes. He’s a fighter, Em, just like you are.”

I take a breath and pull back a little to look at her, wiping my eyes with my hands.

“That’s true,” I say, in between sobs. “Thank you for being here Mads, I really mean that.”

“It’s no problem, you know that.” We hug again as the elevator moves to the ground floor.

We make our way out the double entry doors. Taylor isn’t here yet, so I walk her to the car, feeling thankful I at least remembered where I parked it.

“Jump in and I’ll drop you back at the entryway. Is that where he’ll be?” she asks.

“Yeah.” I nod. “Thanks, Mads.”

“You don’t have to keep thanking me.”

She starts up my car and drives me back around to the drop-off area at the front of the hospital. It’s then we see a very shiny gunmetal gray colored Porsche pull up at top speed, screeching to a halt just behind us.

Maddie looks over at me with raised eyebrows. “That’s gotta be him, right?”

I didn’t even see which was his car tonight when he walked me out into the parking lot after dinner. “I have no idea.” But I have the feeling that it’s him.

CHAPTER16

Taylor

I’m there quicker than I should be… but the second she called me and told me, I knew I wanted to be there for her. It doesn’t even occur to me to wonder why I was the one she wanted to see.

When I pull up in the drop-off zone outside the doors, I see her getting out of the car. I quickly put the Porsche into park and jump out.

“Hey, Em,” I call over as I’m just parked behind them.

She turns to look at me, her eyes growing momentarily wide when she sees it's me. I see Maddie is driving Em’s mom’s car, and seemingly satisfied she’s seen it’s me, and not some weird guy loitering, she gives us a toot of the horn and a wave out of the window as she drives off.

“Hey, Taylor.”

Emmerson seems shy and almost embarrassed suddenly, like tonight never even happened.

I’m sure she has a lot more on her plate now since I left her earlier.

“You all right?” I ask.

She nods. “Yeah… look, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have…”

I shake my head. “Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you called.”

I’m glad it’s me you want to see.
