She raises her eyebrows and walks over to the table, plopping down into a chair.

“And?” she prompts. “He seemed pretty adamant about driving you home.”

“Yeah, I shouldn’t have really put him up to that so late at night.”

She laughs. “He didn’t exactly look like he minded.”

I walk back over to the table and hand her a mug of coffee. “You want to come with me to the hospital after breakfast?”

“Of course.” Maddison nods. “When you tell me what happened last night… I know no deets about dinner.”

I give her the short version rundown because a lot happened and that conversation could run into lunchtime.

“We both got a lot off our chests, I guess.”

“Sounds like it.” She shakes her head, sipping her coffee. “I still think he has feelings for you, Em. But it sounds like he’s being quite guarded about everything.”

I haven’t told her about the kiss yet. He definitely wasn’t being guarded when he kissed me back.

“I don’t exactly blame him.” I sigh. I know I need to tell her. Then I can try to work out what the hell I’m going to do or say to him when he gets back from New York.

CHAPTER17

Taylor

My mind is working overtime when I get onto the team plane.

Not only could I not sleep last night after I got back from dropping Emmerson home, but I haven’t exactly had a chance to talk to my mom yet about the things I uncovered over dinner. I’m still not happy about that, but it will have to wait for another day.

I sit next to Ashton in my usual seat. I’ve got too much buzzing around in my head to make much conversation, and he looks like he feels the same.

“You all right, man?” he asks, moving one of his earphones aside.

“Yeah, long story.” I sigh. He knows I had dinner with Em last night, but he doesn’t know the half of it. “I’ll tell you all about it when we land.”

I don’t want the plane listening to my life drama.

The team morale is pretty high at the moment. There is a buzz in the air, but it’s a nervous kind of excitement. We need this win to get into the Stanley Cup Finals; I know how important it is. We all do.

Winning the Stanley Cup would be an absolute dream come true.

I need to get my head in the game and put my other shit aside at least for the next twenty-four hours. The stakes are too fucking high to get caught up in life drama.

It’s always going to be there, but this past week has felt intense.

Maybe it’s the buildup for the final match of the conference finals. I don’t know.

There’s a lot riding on this.

“You look stressed.” Jay jabs me in the ribs when we’re debarking the plane.

“Didn’t sleep well,” I tell him, hoping he’ll let it go.

“Late night, huh?”

I shake my head. “Nothing that fucking exciting, trust me.”

The kiss was exciting, though. I haven’t stopped thinking about the way she leaned up to me and pressed her lips to mine. It was unexpected, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it.
