“Thank you.”

He led us to the table I requested, instead of the usual backroom, which was overlooking the lake in the restaurant’s backyard that was framed by a garden. Though it wasn’t as beautiful as ours.

I nodded at him and Killian to give us our space then pulled my wife’s chair as I sat in front of her.

Like I knew she would, Mia sat with her mouth wide as she looked out the window. It was late but the lights in the trees illuminated the outside enough for her to see what was there.

“It’s beautiful,” she said, her eyes wide with awe.

I smiled at her, something I seemed to do more whenever she was near, “I thought you would think so.”

“I wished I had my camera.”

“You have your phone.”

Like an excited child, she rushed to her clutch and began snapping away.

While she continued with her photography, the waiter came and I ordered her favorite, pasta, along with a bottle of wine.

“Thank you, Elias,” she said.

“You never have to thank me, Mia. I’m here to serve you,” I said, leaning to stroke her cheek. She really was stunning.

And all mine.

When food was served, we ate in silence. Simply enjoying each other’s presence, as we spared a few glances at each other here and there.

For once, that blissful peace I swore was unattainable for men of my position seemed the easiest to achieve when my wife smiled at me with her brown eyes swirling with glee.

Mia took a sip of her wine as the waiter cleared the table.

“You were right, it tasted similar to Louise’s, but it wasn’t better.”

I chuckled.

“I told you so. Louise is a great cook.”

“Maybe, I should’ve let her teach me before …”

My smile quickly vanished, squinting my eyes as I witnessed a quick flash against the window.

“Are you listening, Elias?” I heard Mia say but another flash hit the window.

“GET DOWN MIA,” I shouted, jumping across the table to pull her behind the column as shots began to ring through the restaurant.

Glass began to fly everywhere as people screamed and scrambled to safety. It was chaos as I smothered Mia between me and the wall while Killian and I began to shoot blindly at the now shattered window.

I saw Killian call for backup as my men ran into the restaurant shooting in the same direction as me and Killian; some dropping like fies along the way to aid us.

She needed to get out of here; tucked away and safe. That was the only thing that would allow me to think clearly.

“Get her away from this building,” I shouted at Killian, as I hid behind the wall to reload.

“Elia—” Mia began to protest.

“Go with him. I’ll be right behind you, baby. Trust me.” I told her as softly as I could, watching the fear dance in her eyes.

“It’s going to be okay,” I reassured her, kissing her forehead.
