His stare alone could slay a million soldiers, and I am struggling to place it. Those eyes fascinate me, and I wonder about the darkness that swirls inside them and the events that placed it there. For a second, we lock eyes, and I couldn’t look away if I tried. He is gazing at me with the most intense stare I have ever received in my life, and it surprises me how much I like it.

Then he looks away and says with no emotion. “You are now a guest in my home while you consider the offer I made you. If I’m guessing correctly, you are still without a job, and I have one on the table.”

He shakes his head. “You will be incapable of walking for the rest of the day, so I have remained here to assist you.”

“Assist me?”

I’m shocked and he nods, turning to face me with a wicked smile on his face.

“I live here alone, Purity. James is my butler, and my bodyguards are men. There is no other person to help you but me because the hell I will let anyone near you after what happened yesterday.”

“Why not?” I’m so confused, and he hisses, “Because I trust no one, Purity. I never have, and you are too important to me for that.”

“I don’t understand. Do you need that vacancy filled so desperately?”

It raises a small smile to his lips, and he nods.

“Yes. I do. There is only one woman who qualifies for the job though and I’m looking at her.”

“But why me? I’m not qualified.”

“You are theonlyperson qualified for the job.”

He stands and frowns down on me.

“I expect you are hungry. We will take lunch on the terrace.”

“Don’t you mean breakfast?”

He laughs softly. “I mean lunch. You have slept for close on twenty-four hours. You need to drink and eat to regain your strength.”

Before I can even process this disturbing information, I am shocked when he reaches down and sweeps me into his strong arms and holds me tight against his broad chest. The same chest I have been struggling to ignore ever since he walked into the room because the tight T-shirt attempting to cover it is fighting a distinctly losing battle.

“What are you doing?” I say with embarrassment.

He chuckles softly, “You can’t walk, remember, and this is the fastest way to get there.”

“But I’m heavy. You’ll injure yourself.”

“Do I look as if I’m struggling?” He chuckles some more, and I must admit, he doesn’t appear to be.

I hold myself rigid and he whispers in my ear, “Relax. You’re safe with me.”

“Am I?”

I really don’t believe I am, and he nods.

“To a point, that is.”

“What does that mean?” I reply and he turns and stares deep into my eyes and whispers, “All the time you do as I say.”

“And if I don’t?”

“You discover who I really am.”

“You speak in riddles.”

I roll my eyes and for a second, he almost seems amused. It feels strange being carried like a baby and especially by a man like him, and I’m not sure what to think about it. Part of me is scared shitless, and the forbidden part of my soul likes it a lot.
